I've already finished the mash and am about to boil. Damn it's hot outside!

Brew day done. Nice day for it. Mashed in at 11:00, beer in the fermentor and all cleaned up at 2:20. Going to be my coffee vanilla porter for the Nottoway Plantation beer fest in June.

Finished brew day as well about an hour ago. Hit all my marks. Going to pitch 3711 and dregs from almanacs saison de brettaville once the wort cools down to about 75. Then tomorrow going to go to the brew store and grab some Giga yeast brux blend.
Plan to ferment this one for about 2 or 3 weeks, then dry hop for 5 days. Also adding some French oak chips somewhere in there.

Mashing in with coffee instead of a beer is weird!

I've done that many times before. It's like working at a brewery.

Anyone had any luck adding either watermelon or watermelon flavoring to a Hefe recipe? Seems like a good flavor for a summertime beer to drink by the pool.

This is gonna be a good day: brewing an IPA and I'm 9 hours into smoking a pork shoulder and the kids are just getting up.

I've had 21st amendment's "hell or high watermelon" and it was a good summer beer. They used American wheat not hefe as the base though. I would think you'd have trouble with hefe or Belgian yeasts overpowering the watermelon.
I was thinking that a watermelon gose would be good (the salt makes sense with watermelon, and the other flavors can be subtle in a gose)

How are you thinking about adding your "watermelon flavor"? I've seen people use both extracts and fresh, not sure which way to go.

I was planning to juice a watermelon and put it into the secondary and possibly some into the keg when it's tapped. I've not used flavor extracts for beer before I always go with fresh fruit

1) I'm jealous that you are brewing and smoking meat this early in the AM.
2) checked on my saison before i left for work. Got some nice krausen. I called an audible last night and did not pitch saison de brettaville dregs, as the beer also has bugs in it. Don't think the bugs would have done anything at all, seeing as my IBU's were at 25, so i put the almanac dregs in my dregs mason jar. Right now i believe i have some Great Raft Oceans Between us dregs, Jolly Pumpkin Roja Dregs, and now Alamanac Saison de Brettaville dregs in the jar. I'll eventually build this up and use it in my next sour. Thinking of eventually doing a pedio/lacto/brett golden ale in the future. Will probably brew up a base beer, pitch onto the yeast cake of my existing sour after i bottle, then add these dregs to it.

I need to rebrew the Watermelon Kolsch that I used to make for festivals. I typically just pureed and strained the watermelon into the secondary and left it for a day or two before transferring into the keg. Nice summer festival beer.

Won't see any activity from the lacto. How hot is the beer?

Speaking of summer festivals, are you brewing anything for the Nottoway beer fest?

I brewed 8 gallons of a Belgian single that I was going to send 5 gallons to that festival. I haven't registered yet because I wanted to ensure that the beer was worth sending and I didn't have to brew something else. Based on initial testings yesterday it should be fine.
Side note, I have never broken a hydrometer in all my years of brewing. My wife broke it yesterday putting it away after I was letting it dry in my thief in the sink drain.

Well, you still have never broken one.

And I still haven't replaced the one I broke about 4 brew days ago. Haven't really felt the need. Beer was made.

I dunno, it's been in my garage

I'm just gonna let it ride a couple days and see what happens with it.
