I'm planning on brewing my first lager as soon as I make room in my beer fridge. I have a recipe in written down. What are your thoughts on a 2nd malt?

3 gal batch:
80% Vienna
16% ????
4% crystal 120

10g northern Brewer @60
10g northern Brewer @5

Trying to decide between biscuit, aromatic, or another malt approx in the 15-20 srm range. Looking for final srm 12-15.

Well, i am now 2 weeks away from having 2 beers on tap in the new kegerator in the outdoor kitchen. I am having an issue in one of them.

So the kegerator i have is this one.

However, it's not on casters, it's mounted under the granite counter tops, and the tower is mounted to the granite. The issue, is where the faucet mounts to the tower. One side of the tower, the faucet will not screw in flush. One side, the faucet will secure and screw in with only maybe 1 thread showing from the faucet. The other side, i have 3-4 threads showing. I've switched faucets and it's definitely a tower problem. I don't know if they didn't notch the tower correctly to receive the faucet or what. Any suggestions?

Only other thing i can thing of is to use a hammer to gently push the faucet in further, then try and thread the faucet to the tower.

Contact manufacturer and ask for new tower. Also put extra insulation in tower to keep tubes cold between pours.

This kegerator has an air cooled tower.

I probably won't notice anything until the summer, but if i start having issues with foam or hot beer, i'll get one of those fans, but this tube seems like it solves the problem.

16% is a lot for both aromatic and biscuit. Maybe something like Munich II. It's a little lighter than your desired srm range, but not by much. You could always throw in a touch more 120 to compensate.

thanks. i've never used either before. i'm looking for a more malty lager with the spice/pine flavor from the northern brewer.

think 8% victory and 8% light-med cyrstal would work, or even less victory?

Victory is a good option. Forgot about that one.

So what's on your brewing Christmas list this year?

I've got a few things i want to upgrade my brew process.

1) Hydra Immersion Chiller - It's an immersion chiller capable of getting wort temps from boiling to ground water temp in 5-6 minutes (for a 12 gallon batch). Everything i've read about them, they are incredible and this would significantly reduce brew time. $159.00

2) SS Brewtech eBrewing 1V System - I've been wanting to go electric for just over a year now, and i'm really impressed with SS Brewtech's stuff. I got an SS InfusSion mash tun last christmas and it is my favorite brew piece right now. This electric system comes with the controller + a 10 gallon kettle with heating element.

LINK

3) Chugger Pump - Down the line of things i want/need is a chugger pump for eventually recirculating the mash. But if i decide to go this route, i'll probably get the SS Brewtech RIMS system that marries perfectly with the ebrewing system.

Lol, much simpler...

I have asked for:

- 5 gal kegs (now that I ferment and serve in them, I would like to get probably 2 more total)
- 3 gal keg
- Yakima Valley Hops gift card
- Personalized tap handles with my homebrewery logo and chalkboard plate so I can write the names of the beers on there.

After I get my kegs, I just can't see myself buying more equipment for a while.... Of course I've said that multiple times already and I haven't stopped.

Check out BeardedBoyDesign on Etsy. He has done a great job with the custom tap handles I've ordered from him.

all i have read is that SS's quality is not as good as Spikes. And they are just expensive. I just made a BOM for a single electric element controller with 2 aux outlets and it comes to around 230 bucks. the 2 most expensive things i used are the EZBoil PID which is 73 bucks and i could swap that out with a way cheaper PID like 20 bucks. and the temp probe. so id 400 bucks worth that night looking stand? it isnt to me.

Im building this to get in to E brewing and then going to build a more automated controller using brucontrol.

I had all this started to get planned out 2 years ago....then kid one came.

I have all the hardware I want. Now I just need the time to brew.

I can confirm the good things about the Hydra. Love it. It works at the advertised times. I can also sing the praises of a single vessel eBIAB setup. I don't have the SS system, but it looks pretty good.

Well the infusSion mash tun o have is awesome and very well made. I don’t trust myself with wiring so I would never do any of that myself. I’ll just save for that system. I’ve been looking at it for over a year now and haven’t heard of major issues with it.

My two SS pieces of hardware have been great. I've had no issues with my brew bucket or my kettle.

I have a Spike kettle and it is great! You can contact the guys over there are have your kettle custom made.

the infusSion mash tun

This is probably my next brewing purchase. I have been eyeing it for awhile. I plan to get it when I either buy or build a RIMS system.

I was able to throw together a brew session yesterday even though it wasn't the stout I wanted to brew. My HB shop ran out of lactose so no milk stout. Ended up brewing an oatmeal stout recipe from AHBA contest winners. Since I haven't brewed in like 6 months I had to pretty much relearn how to brew but all things considered it turned out great. Ended with right over five gallons with OG of 1.059 when the target was 1.060.

This was my first time using a refractometer. Man is it a joy to use one. Will post more specifics about this session later

SO you guys with the infusion mash tun...... im assuming it has better heat retention than a water cooler mash tun.

But does anyone use a rim coil or herms system with it? im assuming it shouldnt need to turn on much to keep temp.

But then... why spend the money on a insulated mash tun if you have the means to keep it at temp with a heater? i can use it for more stuff.

Yes, mine does. I noticed my water cooler tun was starting to lose about 3 degrees over an hour. The InfuSsion is steady throughout the mash.

Well, you'll still have heat loss at the tubing and disturbing the mash. So you'd still need something. SS made a RIMS coil for about $250, but personally, i don't see why i need it other than improving my mash efficiency which is sitting around 84% right now.

You don't need to. If you are using RIMS, then an insulated tun isn't really needed at all.
