Anyone here have a Strawberry Blonde recipe they care to share?

It's been too long and I'm itching to brew again soon.

Just a note on Northern Brewer customer service.....in short, it is terrible. I have a Big Mouth Carboy I purchased from them last year. The screw on lid leaks and is very difficult to get off. If you read the reviews, it is a common problem. They refuse to do anything about this issue and so I have a useless carboy from them.

Yeah, I've heard lots of bad things about them over the year or two they've been around. Supposedly made a change to the design after initial major problems but doesn't seem like they have everything figured out.

Sounds like it's time for an SS brewbucket or something similar for you.

Seems like th old Big3 homebrew stores (AHB, Midwest, and NB) have all gone downhill. AHB screwed me on some stuff and wouldn't take responsibility, and then NB screwed me on a first gen Big Mouth bubbler by selling a shitty product. I think NB and MW are now the same company.

Thankfully it seems LHBS are more common and higher quality than they used to be. I only ever ordered online because the options in BR were slim to none for a while.

You too huh? Seemed like a great idea for dry hopping....and getting the hop sock full of wet hops out afterwords.

The Big Mouth bubbler is a terrible product. End of story.

Why the hell do you make a carboy with a shite ton of ridges on the inside of the plastic?

That's bad. I'm betting that ZS's was the glass one too and it was crap. Those Spiedel fermentors seem nice. I just have the regular 6.5 gallon better bottles and I'm not mad at them at all.

I was able to snag some ECY Dirty Dozen today.

quote:

Twelve (12) different isolates of Brettanomyces exhibiting high production of barnyard "funk" and esters. Dryness, ripe fruit, and acidity will be encountered over a period of months and over time (>1 yr), may display gueuze-like qualities in complexity. Contains various isolates from lambic-producers, B. bruxellensis, B. anomala, B. lambicus, and B. naardenensis. For those who want the most from Brett yeast, whether a 100% Brett fermentation is desired or adding to secondary aging projects.

Interested to try it out on a few things.

Speaking of brett. I have several dregs in my fridge i've been keeping in a mason jar. Should i try to repopulate then pitch into my brew sunday, or just pitch em after they've warmed up?

FWIW the dregs are from Hill Farmstead, Jolly Pumpkin, Cantillon, Goose Island, and Stone's enjoy after Brett IPA.

Yep....you know me well. I guess I can start using it as a sour/ brett fermenter.

The top works on mine, but my glass has tons of air bubbles. I still use it, but damned if it doesn't make me nervous moving it around. Hell, at work I handle sheets of glass that are way bigger than me, and they make me less nervous than this little bubbler.

Does anyone know if there is a mash PH adjustment tool in Beersmith? I found the water profile adjust tool, but see nothing on mash, and want to calc how much phophoric acid i will need. Typically i use brewersfriend, because it used to help me convert my salts to teaspoons, but now that i have a gnats arse scale, i don't need to measure it that way anymore.

I don't think so... Beer smith seems almost useless to me to adjust water for any reason.

I picked up some grain and yeast at lunch today. I'd like to brew this evening. We'll see if I can escape work. I'm brewing my Bottomland saison, but using oats instead of rye just because I feel like something different. I'm also trying out White Labs' newish French saison strain. Hop wise, I'm unsure what direction I want to go. Classic hops to see what the yeast can do? Or bold American hops because frick yeah! Decisions, decisions, decisions.

For the pH meter crowd, I got one similar to Canuck. I was trying to calibrate it last night, and it was giving me screwy numbers. I let it sit in distilled water for 10 minutes, then adjusted it to the 6.86 and 4.00 solutions they gave me. It was reading correct for both of those. I stick it back in the plain distilled water, and it measures 6.0. It's been a few years since high school, but I thought distilled water was supposed to be pretty near 7.0. So I go through the process again, and it's reading accurate on the two solutions, so I stick it back in the distilled water and it's measuring 5.5 now. Stumped me. All I could figure is maybe some of the solutions got carried over on the meter into the distilled water and lowered the pH some? Seems like a drastic drop for a small amount of solution that might be transferred on the electrode. I even added more distilled water, and it still was between 5.5 and 6.0

Yeah, we'll see how well the one I have holds up. I'm going to get more calibration solution at the store most likely and keep an eye on it.

Only thing I could think is to let it sit for a few and stir it around real good while checking.
