I love burritos. If I’m eating Mexican food, I’m getting a burrito.

There’s a few places I’ll stop to get a burrito and they’re mostly fine, if not spectacular.

But I randomly just went into a whole in the wall place. Didn’t look like the cleanest place and everything looked broken. I could t understand a single thing the cook said. But I got a burrito. And damn if it wasn’t the best Mexican burrito I’ve had in two years. (I am a sucker Korean burritos so that’s my favorite burrito right now overall).

The thing that separated this burrito was the tortilla. It was obviously soft shell but it had an incredible crispy texture to it and I have no clue what they did differently to it because I watched them make it.

Why do hole in the wall restaurants seem better a lot of time

I lived in the southern part of Mexico for a couple of months, and this sums it up.

If Mexican grandmothers are running the place, everything's going to be clean af.

The only employees there were grandmotherly sorts and they were cleaning. But the lighting was bad and it was just kinda dingy

They can't lean on white tablecloths, fresh flowers in the centerpiece, the maitre'd and waiter kissing your arse, etc.

They get one shot to put something in your face that's so delicious that you come back. So, that's what they do.

The Garces Family had a small Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood in Mid-City that closed down many years ago.

I found out family members opened another one on Williams Blvd. out toward the lake that the wife and I will go to from time to time.

They want to be there to feed you, not impress you with frills and things.

I can to TD asking for best Mexican in BT back in 2006. El Rio grande was the consensus. So I went. The salsa they served me was fricking pace picante sauce. I have never been back. Idk if they were having issues that night or what but I couldn't believe people here recommended that.

I need to go give it another try. Maybe some rift in the cosmic fray made the salsa taste like pace.

I see people say el Rio all the time here also. I went once. The food was so greasy. I did not like it at all.

Asian and Mexican places. The dirtier they look (look, not ARE) the better the food.

I know three people who say that Rio is the best Mexican in BR.

I had the same experience as you. I get Queso when I eat Mexican and I’m telling you I was eating Cheese Wiz. I’ve had bad experiences at Mexican places before, but usually something is decent, drink, queso, salsa, something will be good. I couldn’t believe how shitty I felt paying $40 for shite that Taco Bell or even Jack in The Box Tacos could’ve beat. Margarita sucked, food sucked, salsa and queso sucked.

I always see people there and I always think maybe I should give it another chance. I will not eat there again unless one of the people that said it was good are with me, to tell me what I’m eating is good.

I'm right with you. El Rio Grande is like cheesy 1970's Middle-American tex-mex. It's mediocre salsa, terrible queso, and bland ground beef. Their shredded chicken isn't even that good. Rio Grande is one of those old Baton Rouge staples that clearly survive thanks only to inertia and nostalgia. I wish Pancho's would have survived instead. El Rio Grande is barely a step up from Taco Bell, if even that.

In Baton Rouge, I go to La Tiendita, La Morenita, or occassionally the mexican food truck that often hangs out in front of Mid City Tower on Florida at Cloud.

La Tiendita

I've had tacos there for lunch and they were below average. I've had better from the food truck at the gas station on Old Hammond near Millerville. Maybe I had a bad trip? I'm usually more than willing to try a place twice.

Old school Mr Taco was solid too before they expanded.

I've never gotten the tacos from La Tiendita. I usually get the burritos, which are very very good.

The Tacos from La Morenita are nearly unbeatable. The only place in this state that comes close is Tacos & Beer in Hammond.

I'll have to try it out. I worked in Bon Carre for 10 years and never tried them when I was out that way.

If they have it, definitely get the barbacoa.

The lunch counter is on the left side of the store. In the back, they have a deli where you can buy some of the cooked meats they use at the lunch counter by the pound.

Was probably a fresh or house made tortilla. At home I'm a big fan of using the ones you find near the dairy section at the grocery store.

Let me clarify: when I say that El Rio Grande is my favorite Mexican, I'm talking Tex-Mex. If I want something authentic, La Morenita is my go-to, no doubt.

I really don't give two shits about what kind of salsa they use. I go there for the guacamole, enchilada con huevos, and chocolate chimichanga. It's greasy, messy, and delicious.

I also really, really like Don Jose's on College. The Pollo Hawaiiano and Carne Asada are top-notch.

There's a place on Gardere called La Doña that looks like it might be good. Been meaning to try it out, but last time I was going I went to the La Salvadoreña food truck instead. (Not Mexican but still very good.)
