I was in Rouses earlier today and they have avocados on sale at 4 for $1. Excellent price if you are going to make some guacamole for the Super Bowl. I picked up 8 of them to make a batch Sunday afternoon.

The only reason why I don't fool with avocados is that I can't tell when they are ripe..

Pop the stem off on the top. If it comes off easy and looks green it is ready. If it is hard to get off, let it site for a couple more days and try again.

Give it a little squeeze. The more softness, the better. God, I was at some store the other day. You would have thought all the avocados were made of marble.

Mexican groceries are the place to get avocados. Always super cheap and always ripe.

Alberstons has them 6 for $1.50. It comes in a 6 pack bag. We loaded up.

To a certain degree. Too much softness often indicates it's past ripe and turning brown inside the skin.
The ones are Rouses are a mixed bag. Some you stay away from being too soft and others, if needed in a day or so, too hard.
I like it when I gently squeeze them and the flesh gives just a bit. They are usually good for a few days when like that.
