Thought I would share a meal I had at St. John Smithfield while in London the other night. It was an incredibly different menu than I usually see, so I thought maybe some people on the FDB would be interested in it.

You can see a sample menu here. It was slightly different when I was there, but overall it's a very similar menu.

For the record, I asked prior to the meal if taking photos would be acceptable, and was informed that quite to the contrary, it was encouraged. However, I made sure to keep the flash off.

For starters, we got the crispy pig skin and the bone marrow. I read (and saw on an old episode of Anthony Bourdain) that St. John is essentially the reason why bone marrow can be found on menus around the world.

First entree, I got the Lamb Sweetbreads. Honestly, I had never tried sweetbreads before, so I figured this would be a good place to start. They were incredibly tender.

Our second entree was a special: a kidney and beef pie for two with a bone marrow center.

Finally, for dessert, I had the strawberry sorbet with a shot of Russian vodka. You pour the shot over the sorbet and eat it. It was essentially an elevated daiquiri.

Anyway, it was a really special meal so I thought I'd share it with the board.

That has to be one of the richest meals I’ve ever seen. Marrow and organs followed by a dish of both.

I like it.

I am glad you enjoyed it, but damn that looks and sounds nasty.

Agreed, organs and marrow just aren't my thing. But glad you enjoyed.

If you haven’t tried sweetbreads or marrow, I strongly recommend that you do. Sweetbreads aren’t really my thing. Maybe once every couple of years. Marrow is legit.

I understand your opinion, but if you do ever have the opportunity I suggest you give it a shot.

Maybe you still won’t like it, but I think you might be surprised. There’s just so much rich flavor.

I would eat it, but I wouldn't look forward to it. His pictures don't really help to stimulate the appetite either.

Yeah I’m definitely no photographer.

And as I said I left the flash off to be respectful to the other diners. Although I did see people taking full-fledged photos.

It was a great presentation and tasted just like a refined daiquiri. I’m a fan.

I requested fava beans and they didn’t have any. I was furious.

Like, cut-off-a-face-to-wear-as-a-mask furious.

As long as you enjoyed, that is my biggest fear at a fancy restaurant being a picky eater. I would have to widen my taste and then try it regardless since they don't offer variations.

They had a duck leg on the menu that someone in my party had. It was very straight forward and very well cooked.

But it was certainly a different menu. Honestly, if you can just shut your brain off and trust the kitchen, I think you’d be amazed at some of the things they can do with parts like liver and kidneys.

Happy to post. I enjoy seeing the meals other people enjoy, so thought I would share the same.

If only I was better at taking pictures.

You did great!

The sweetbreads. For some reason I didn't imagine they'd be served looking so much like what they are! Maybe I've only seen pics of them fried, where you can't see the shape of the organs. Do they taste like giblets or liver?
