Definitely was before Cane's. I've only had Cane's a couple of times, because it came in right as I left La.

Close, Bailey's was across the street form Canes on Lee Dr., when Baileys closed down, they built the CVS. I used to love Bailey's when I was a Freshman/Sophomore at LSU, it was way cheaper than Canes, but then they boarded up
ETA: AuburnTiger beat me too it

This. And I think Bailey's was 2nd in BR, renovating an old Fast Track Burger joint; which Cane's did all through BR as well.
Graves was smart and put his 1st store right off campus.

funny thing that Todd Graves derived his idea from Guthrie's. Thats a fact. Guthrie's has been opened before Raising Canes. I believe one of the first ones was opened in Tallahassee. we have a few up here in Hoover and Vestavia Hills

Where all is Canes located? When I would read people on here talking about Cane's I always assumed it was something similar to Guthrie's.
I don't know when Guthrie's first opened, but I know it has been at least 20 years that I know and they have quite a few locations in areas further east that LA, esp in college towns.
Although the one in Florence, AL went out of business while the Zaxbys thrives. But the original Guthries was in Haleyville, AL, (at least that's what I have always heard) and their menu consisted of:
Chicken finger sandwich
Chicken finger plate (fingers and fries)
extra sauce
Soft drinks & sweet tea
The others have added a few things like slaw, but that's about it.
Similar to Dreamland BBQ (the original one) in the limited menu. Which I think is smart. There's no way a place can cook 50 different things well. Find 1 or 2 things you do better than anyone else and roll with it.

Similar thing happened to me when I went to Guthrie's in Picayune. I mentioned this place was just like Cane's, and they said that Cane's was just like them actually. Didn't say anything about the owner of Canes ever working there but seems like they were definitely around beforehand.

Apparently Guthrie's has been slinging chicken since 1978, and the original location was Haleyville, and I've eaten there many times. I can assure you the Guthrie family is not "butt hurt" about anything. They've made millions and millions slinging chicken and doubt they care about anyone else at this point.
Per Guthrie's website.
“The Original Chicken Finger Specialist”
Hal Guthrie opened the first restaurant to bear the Guthrie family name as a full service restaurant in Haleyville, Alabama in 1965. In 1978, Hal added the famous Guthrie’s chicken fingers to the menu complemented by the “Original Famous Sauce” created by Hud Guthrie at the age of 10. The sauce creation was the result of a family contest between the Guthrie children to enhance the chicken fingers at the family restaurant. The original sauce is made exactly the same today as it was in 1978.
Hal’s oldest son, Chris Guthrie, talked his dad into opening a restaurant in Auburn, Alabama in 1982. Hal and Chris contemplated ways to speed production. Alas, the idea of serving chicken fingers as the only entrée emerged! The implementation of this unique concept made Guthrie’s “The Original Chicken Finger Specialist.”
Two years later Hal and Chris opened Guthrie’s of Athens, the second restaurant specializing in chicken fingers. The Guthrie family, Hal, Melissa, Chris, Hud, Joe Kelly and Anna Margaret opened many other stores across the South.
Guthrie’s began franchising in 2005. As of this writing there are over 27 Guthrie’s in operation. Many more franchise’s have been sold and will be opening soon. The Guthrie family appreciates your business and looks forward to serving you the Best Chicken Fingers in the World.

ETA: I don't eat there though because the cheap bastards want to charge you for extra sauce. Maybe I'm just as stingy, but seems to me that you could be afforded one extra sauce without being charged for it. It's not like I'm going up there asking for half a dozen.

Bailey's served much better chickens. Better tasting, better seasoned and bigger tenders.
Cane's always had them on the bread. The fries were a toss up, but I liked Bailey's better.
RIP Bailey's.

Dude saw what Todd Graves was doing and is probably kicking himself for not doing it sooner.
Cane's started off of Highland Road right off campus in 1996 and he has already eclipsed 100 franchises.

And they always had college kids running the place that would give their friends bags of chicken tenders and fries... might be partially why they didn't make it in the end. RIP, loved all those free meals.

Again, as has been mentioned I don't think the Guthries founder ever had any ambitions to be the biggest chain around like Todd Graves did. You don't need but a handful of successful fast food locations to rake in some serious cash.
I don't think it's a matter of Graves/Canes being any better than Guthries as much as it is Canes being more aggressive/ambitious about expansion. Frankly, the Guthries and Canes are basically identical quality wise. I noticed VERY little difference between the two. Both are decent for what they are. I prefer both over Zaxbys though.

Graves ran the one in Athens, I believe. Someone said that it started in Alabama but one of the first ones was the Athens one. The guys that ran Guthries were so terrible in terms of business acumen that they failed to take the concept far enough.
Graves was smart enough to see the good idea, and make it what it is today. Graves is the smart one in all of this and the Guthrie's people are the dumbasses.
