Below is what I posted to you on April 21st from Blue Bell's website. It's no longer on their site. If they did start putting dates, then it goes against everything they said in the Q & A below.
Q: Why doesn't Blue Bell have an expiration date?
A: It's been said that the main reason is because our fans are eating it as fast as we can crank it out. But, keeping Blue Bell fresh depends more on special handling and tender loving care than anything else. Many foods rely on preservatives to maintain quality, but ice cream and other related frozen desserts depend on sub-zero temperatures in the range of -10 degrees to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. At this constant temperature, Blue Bell's great taste can be preserved for a little over a year. However, if Blue Bell is subjected to warm temperatures, it will melt and then refreeze, creating an icy texture. Since ice cream is so sensitive and relies on special handling, a "freshness date" would be very misleading.

the CEO should be fired. Now that it has come out that listeria has been a problem since at least 2013, he is responsible and shouldn't even get a chance to resign.
This.
And the market share from this that they may permanently lose will be brutal. I can't imagine a CEO surviving this.

What if the listeria made it taste so good...

The numbers that look like dates have been there as long as I can remember because I always checked them when I bought the ice cream not knowing they were apparently meaningless. I recall being a bit disturbed by them, though, because many times, the date was well over a year away.

Like you, I'm a date checker and if you're going to have a born on, use by, or sell by date which Blue Bell should have, it needs to be noted as such and easy to understand.
I know the date thing is not what caused Blue Bell's problems, but it looks like their arrogance and bottom line mentality has caught up with them. They're in for lots & lots of lawsuits.

They pay for that shelf space, and probably are paying extra to make sure they keep it...

IIRC it was Edy's that took over at my local Albertsons. The shelves definitely were not empty a couple days ago.

I haven't noticed any others but at the closest food town it is frozen waffles. I have never seen so many Eggo waffles in my life. I'm sure there is other frozen breakfast foods also as Blue Bell had a huge space at food town.

Which tastes like crap. There's also alot more Talenti Gelato.. it's ok, but not nearly as good as Blue Bell Ice Cream. But then a) it's not ice cream and b) it doesn't purport to be.
Mayfield should expand their territories... they can definitely fill the gap left by the lack of Blue Bell.

At some stores, it looks like they just spread all the other brands out across the shelves, making them only a few deep per product.

You can still get Blue Bell on Craiglist advertised as pre-listeria....Might order me some Blue Bell to go along with the king crab legs I get from Craiglist.

Blue Bell lays off 1,450 workers; 1,400 more furloughed
quote:
BRENHAM, Texas — Blue Bell Creameries will lay off hundreds of workers and reduce hours and pay for others in wake of its voluntary recall last month of all of its ice cream, the company announced Friday.
Almost 4 in 10 in the Blue Bell workforce of 3,900 will lose their jobs. That's 750 full-time employees and 700 part-time workers. Another 1,400 employees will be furloughed.

Being many months away from trying to be back in biz again along with all the lawsuits they'll be facing, these lay-offs are not surprising.
