quote:

. . . on a few sultry mornings each summer, during a full moon, locals spring from their beds in response to news of a wondrous natural phenomenon occurring on a spot along a 15-mile stretch of coast. Catfish, shrimp, and flounder rise from Mobile Bay’s floor and swarm at the water’s edge, eels shimmy onto the sand, and crabs flee the water, scaling barnacled docks and tree trunks. This exodus of sea life provides residents with as much seafood as they can gig, net, or scoop. Inspired by the celebratory atmosphere it brings in its wake, they call it a jubilee.

I would say 90% of the beach on mobile bay is private property. The shoreline is lined with private homes and only have about 10 ft of beach after grass stops.

If water comes up on it during high tide its not private property, it belongs to the state and is open to the public.

I remember asking my dad if the world was ending the first time I saw the jubilee

I had been going to lower AL for years and never heard of the jubilee until I was sitting in an Orange Beach condo and happened to see an article online by a guy who grew up on the Eastern Shore.

I was still skeptical until I saw several photos of boats loaded down with seafood. I told a friend back home, and to my surprise she knew all about it. Her grandmother lived on the shore and took full advantage.

There are actually a decent amount of spots. it really just depends on where the jubilee happens. A lot of homes have granted access for the house across the street as well.

Most people dont care. I know a few folks on the eastern shore. Some with some giant houses and a few with homes where the land is two three times the value of the house.

The land below the highest high tide is public, at least in Louisiana. The difficulty sometimes is getting access from the land, but you can use your boat to get there.

The article mentions:

quote:

There are catch limits on flounder and shrimp, but during jubilees, no one polices the numbers or minds private property lines.
