All I can help with are anti-recs in Huntsville. Dreamland and Big-Bob's (in Decatur) were disappointing BBQ.

Couple of German places come to mind:
Ol Heidelberg Traditional and good food, but service was a slow as Weihnachten the few times I have been there.
Hildegard's Also good food, but paced much better to match a weekday business schedule.

For higher end, look at Cotton Row or Commerce Kitchen. Are they still good?

If you like the brewpub type thing, go to Campus 805 and check out Straight to Ale, Yellowhammer Brewing, and Earth&Stone wood fired pizza.
Stovehouse is right down the street about 1/2 mile and has a good Mexican restaurant.

The Poppy and Parliament is a fantastic English pub in the downtown area. I tried several pizzas, and the one inside of Innerspace Brewing was the best hands down to me.

Tried this the last time I was up there. Really enjoyed it. The cigar bar that is around the corner from it is awesome as well.

I'd go to yellow hammer brewing. the attached pizza spot is really good and the brews at yellow hammer are great

I was planning on going to Mazzara's Vinoteca Wednesday and Char on Thursday before I leave. Are there alternatives I should choose instead? Those looked like good options

No those places are great! Lots of good choices in HSV these days as long as they can stay adequately staffed.

I've not been there before, but love German food. Currywurst is wonderful as far as sausages go, assuming you enjoy curry. Goulash is pretty varied but can be amazing. Schnitzel always great as well.

Save room for a slice of the beautiful cakes that both tend to have on display as you walk in.
Although that may be hard, as German food can be heavy. Eat well, pace yourself and report back.
