I know very little about this holiday celebrated by the African American community. I understand the celebration is largely spiritual and the foods used are basic fruit and nuts keeping with that theme. But, knowing people from South Louisiana tend to put our own spin on things in a way different from other cultures, what's happening locally, especially on the culinary side?

We’re going with Christmas leftovers for lunch and pinto beans for dinner.

Black guy I know from high school takes all of his basic fruit and nuts and boils it all with a sack of Chackbay. He says it’s good, but he always has to add salt. Just depends on how much fruit and nuts you’ve got. Serve with a nice glass of water or enjoy all by itself, keeping with the theme.

Happy Kwanza

We banned Kwanzaa a couple years back in my neighborhood. Highly controversial at the time, but the results don't lie. Underage illegal smoking and public cursing drastically reduced to all time lows.

Like most of the others. Independence Day is the only OG holiday with ties to its date going back the origin of the country.

Even Christmas and Easter were assigned arbitrary dates. Stuff like Labor Day and Columbus Day and Memorial Day and Thanksgiving were “fabricated” as we went along.

Columbus Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day all celebrate days that are relevant to American history.

Kwanzaa does not.

No, and it's even close. You can ask anyone what the purpose of each of those holidays is. I have no idea what the point of Kwanza is and nobody I know can tell me. It's just an appropriation of many other celebrations. I'm sorry, but "being black" is not something, in and of itself, that is worthy of celebrating.

Our kids learned that in third grade. You could ask them any day of the year to name the principles of Kwanzaa, and they would instantly rattle off:

Umoja: Unity. To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
Kujichagulia: Self-Determination: ...
Ujima: Collective Work and Responsibility. ...
Ujamaa: Cooperative Economics. ...
Nia: Purpose. ...
Kuumba: Creativity. ...
Imani: Faith.

Kujichagulia is their favorite. They ran around saying it all day today.
