Is there a discernible price difference?
Land O lakes is usually like $5/lb, kroger has 2 versions; their brand is $4 and the generic is $3.
walmart is usually about $3.50

I mean I guess I don't use enough butter to need a "recipe butter" and a "daily butter."

This is why I come here. So, I’ll take pumpkin head in the black north face looking jacket. Fourth or so from the left in the front row.

You should be making your own butter anyway

i'm asking in all seriousness here; how could different types of butter from the same plant end up being handled differently?
Different ingredients? Different processing techniques? One could be blended longer or with better milk or with a higher milk to whatever ratio. Pretty easy to imagine scenarios in which the same plant could make a similar product of varying quality for different companies.

When you say finally have proof, does that mean that this is something you have spent your entire life trying to do? Is this your personal vendetta? Been doing research in a lightless basement?

I figured most ppl know this....butter is a commodity. Only difference in those oblong sticks is the branding. I buy butter 3-5 lbs at a time for baking, and it’s whatever is cheapest. I’m not using it in recipes/baking where butterfat percentage is crucial (ie, croissants), so whatever is cheapest works for me.
My “eating” butter is usually a cultured European style block. Nothing finer than fresh bread and good butter, esp with flaky sea salt. If I lived where “gros sel” butter was readily available, I’d buy that.

Land O Lakes is bad butter, you may as well get any butter out there.
Shurfine at Macs is really good, much better
As bad as Land O Lakes regular is, their European is really good.
I do enjoy Kerrygold too. Just hot bread and a pat of butter.....so good

You are really gonna freak out when you find out that Johnson and Johnson makes bandaids for both Walmart brand and their brand.
That's how big box does business.

They all do and even in the same facilities. They'll just do separate runs. One day, they package the slightly shittier stuff to brand as great value. Later, they package their own name brand, full price product.
This is true for anything that has a store brand. The store isn't doing it themselves, they're contracting out. And the manufacturer isn't going to package the exact same thing with 2 different brand names at different prices. They'll lose money. Especially since I believe Walmart forces some manufacturers to make a great value label in order to get distribution of their main brand.

Having said all that the butter in Denmark was delicious. So much so I tried to bring a pound back with me and talked another guy on the trip with me into doing it.
fricking Denmark customs dumped my butter but a different guy let him keep his.
My guy defined it as a liquid over the oz limit and his guy defined it as a solid/food.
Stupid.
