This is the most hyperbolic statement in human history. See, I can do it too.

I don't think its overrated. I liked it. Thought it was a cool spot. Just compared to beer bars up here it isn't on the same level. As some have said, that has more to do with what's available in the region.

What exactly are you looking for? Sorry Russian River doesn't distribute here

I think this encapsulates the argument against some folks' dislike of Avenue Pub. You have to keep in perspective what state/region the bar is in. I've yet to find a better beer bar in the Southeast than A Pub. Atlanta might have one, but I don't much about that city. Not sure if we're counting Charleston or Tampa in this debate.

The other complaints about Ave that are common and obvious are that the downstairs allows smoking and that the bartenders are rude. As bottomland alluded to, that doesn't much bother me. There aren't many dicey, unmanicured places to hang out in this country anymore. I'm glad to have a dive craft beer bar stone's throw from my house.

Re: bartenders I don't find bad, but that may be because they know me and aren't immediately on the defense as I've seen them be with strangers who they're probably expecting (and which happens often) to ask for a Bud Light.

Re: the smoking, I think they are more than accommodating by having the upstairs as non-smoking area .. they also have a back patio and a killer balcony.

Re: the plastic cups .. seriously? I've only seen this happen during Mardi Gras and it's unfathomable how anyone would expect them to not take advantage of the monetary opportunity of being on the parade route by offering to-go cups + more beers that tourists and non-craft beer drinkers will buy. Guess I'm just a stupid capitalist though.

We also got some chronic doughnuts, but I can't remember where they were from.

I think that most complaints about Ave Pub are things that are out of their hands like distribution. That will come though. We used to not have shite in the Birmingham area and now the selection is badass. I couldn't ask for more.

I agree about Frenchmen St. I really enjoy hanging out there and hearing good music when I get a chance to go to New Orleans. Really looking forward to trying Cochon Butcher next time I'm there.

I believe it's a legal issue. I don't believe places on the route can serve glass during the parades. City Ordinance. Check yo codes, Brah!

Re the Butcher Expansion: its like they opened an entirely new restaurant. I'd say, from a layman's measuring view, they quadrupled the space. When you stand in the "old" Butcher, it really sets in just how small that place was.

Plus they added a fairly large bar with big garage doors that open out to the street.

Please resume the weekly beer pissing and moaning contest.

Trivial point. Even if that is the case, it still makes sense for bars along the route to serve in plastic. Not only can customers take their drinks to go, it's also easier on the staff who are most likely slammed and don't have to deal with washing glassware.

Yes, and add to that people walking out with their glassware. Just not practical.

Yep

Not my first trip to New Orleans though. Went four or five times during college. I will say this was my first true vacation in New Orleans weekend. I would stay with my buddy in Lakeview and didnt really eat out because I was a broke college student and his mom was a damn good cook.

I have never had a remotely negative experience with the bartenders. Elaine (sp?) has even comped me a few times (mostly just for knowing R2R). You probably have to be a dick or ask for a shitty beer to get on their nerves. It's not like Toronado in SF where the bartenders try to out-a-hole each other.

They seem to be better now than they were a couple years back.
