I'll give you the same advice I give everyone with this question:

These are terrible tips for a first date, all of them above. They are almost all nouveau and try to force the dining "Experience" on its patrons. It will make you look desperate and you are trying too hard.
Or, it'll make you look like you know what the frick you are doing.

Need more info.
--Is she 19 or 35? (I'm female, so I don't meant it like THAT. I mean that she may have an, ahem, "youthful" palate that won't appreciate ethnic food or organ meats.)
--Dietary restrictions? No worse move than dragging a semi-vegetarian to Mr. John's or a gluten-avoiding carb hater to a bakery or pizzeria.

Poor hungryone should really have a "woman*"
This epiphany happens all the time.

Not sure what it says about people who are surprised by my gender. But you know, it's like 1955 up in here at times, ya herd?
Back to the original question: I'd go for someplace lower key, not fussy. How about Toups' Meatery? (unless he/she has vegetarian leanings) Uber-casual, friendly service, some housemade sausages and occasional oddities on the menu (will give you something to talk about). If the date flops, you'll still have a nice meal. Also, it is a thoroughly unpretentious room; you can see how he/she reacts, providing you with a gauge of his/her "fussiness" level.

I still get that, too.
I knew because she posted on other food sites I read and I could tell, plus I've read her blog often.
As far as the date, don't overdo on the first date. If there's a second, third etc..., you've set the bar high. First date should be fun, light and not over the top...somewhere casual.

I wish, then I might be retiring some time soon. Sadly, us GenXers will have to work until we die at our desks. I think the social security trust runs out of money 10 years before my projected retirement date. Sucks to be in line behind the baby boomers.

You won't find a good mid range steak place.
I'd recommend Ye Old College Inn. Food is really good, and it's reasonably priced. After dinner, go next door to Rock & Bowl for some live music.
Other suggestions:
Vincent's
Apolline
Mariza (Marigny) (Bywater - Thanks for the correction Oenophile Brah)
Jamila's
Boucherie

None of these are considered mid range, and it's trying way too hard for a first date.
