Exactly, Yeez

Here's an article about the proposal
LINK

quote:

If passed, the bill would:

• Allow in-state breweries that manufacture no more than 60,000 barrels of beer per year to sell their beer for on premises consumption through tap rooms and to sell up to 576 ounces per day per consumer for off premises consumption;

• Provide for an annual cap for tap room sales and off premises consumption sales of 10% of the annual production for the brewery or 1,500 barrels, whichever is less;

• Require breweries to pay state excise tax and sales tax on beer sold through the tap room and for off premises consumption;

• Increase the production cap for brewpubs to 75,000 gallons per year, roughly 2,500 barrels;

• Remove the food requirements from the existing brewpub qualification requirements; and;

• Provides the necessary safeguards for all tiers of the beer industry

Dang, Coat, you're up early.

I've always been a SoPro homer, and would love for them to be able to utilize the taproom fully.

I really hate that 2nd point. Don't understand the need for a 10% cap.

Didn't realize they couldn't sell on site actually. If it like Chandelier where they won't sell on site, so you pay for a tour and get "free" samples?

Was going to open FBD but S/O have me a discouraging look.

The 10% is the same as Louisiana, I believe. Before, breweries in LA couldn't sell anything directly to the consumer.

It's dumb to have that cap, I agree. However, because of the mafia distribution lobby buying off corrupt politicians, having that cap my be the only chance of getting the legislation passed.

We say the closet-drinking, so-called dry Baptists/Evangelicals are the reason for these middle-men mandated beer laws, but I think these days the distributors are more the reason.

So a brewpub can only sell up to 1500 barrels of their own beer? Can they supplement with guest taps?

That really sucks, because there are some fantastic brewpubs out there that do great buusiness, and that restriction would really prevent brewpubs from taking off, I would think.

Also, that 60,000 barrel limit is a bitch because that prevent a brewery like Abita from opening up a brewpub. Those larger breweries have the resources to build really nice places. If that were the law everywhere, then Deschutes, Stone, Surly, 10 Barrel, Oskar Blues, etc, would have to shut down their brewpubs.
