Inspired by mr fatarsenclarse weekend journaling I present to you the first running fat arse Chicago eat my fat arse weekend edition
Day starts on Friday in the office. MORE CUPCAKES arrive on the desk from a rep. Score. MoreCupcakes are delicious! I quickly scarf down the white and chocolate one. So moist.
Then it’s off to MARIPOSA in Neiman Marcus. I was pretty excited bout this because I hadn’t been in since they transformed from Zodiac last month. New interior, slightly new menu. But same old popovers and delicious beef broth brought out for free. Best soup you’ll ever drink.. My fat arse ate four popovers total.
Started the meal with the hummus – two types, regular and red pepper. Home made breadsticks. Very boring. And would not get again
Now one thing at the Neiman Marcus restaurants is they have models walking around showing off merchandise from the store. Friday there were two 6 foot brunnettes showing off some D’Ladi dresses. Dresses were beautiful and the models were hitting on me but I shut them down. No time for that. I chose the Filet Oscar for my main.
It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Prime filet, prob 3oz of lump crab with a great hollandaise. I will be eating here more often.
And then for dessert made the no brainer when you’re at Neiman Marcus – the $250 cookies. I’ll let you read the legend, but these are very good. Although this time I thought they were a little dryer that usual.
After having to shake the models off my arms, I finally made my way south to Millenium Park to see Jaume Plensa’s 4 new sculptures that he brought out in honor of the 10 year anniversary of his big video/waterfall objects being installed there. Plensa really plays with depth perception with his recent stuff and it makes me quite dizzy.
I then headed across the street to Nordstrom’s Second Rack, the secondhand store for Nordstrom. Always like to get good deals, and found some Donald Pliner driver shoes reduced 90% down to $30. Sweet
Later on to celebrate, decided to go to Purple Pig. Saw it recently won another Michelin Bib Gourmand award. I’ve walked by this place hundreds of times but it’s always crowded. This time I was willing to wait, so called 2 friends and grabbed a table after an hour wait. The next few pictures will make you cream. I’ll just tell you what each is with a 5 star rating scale. I actually liked this restaurant more than any other in Chicago, and I’ve now eaten at over 350. I can say this restaurant would make it in NOLA.
olive oil basil poached tuna with quail egg, baby tomato and green beans
5/5 – just fantastic flavors
Halibut with olives, pickled watermelon, on top a artichoke lentil puree with a glazed beet sauce surrounding it. 5/5 – this was the best dish of the night.
the pork neck bone smear with ricotta. 3/5 – tasted like a red gravy. Good, but not great
fried Brussels sprouts with thyme and lemon. 3/5. Very tasty, but too simple to be served with other far more interesting items
peanut crusted scallops with chickpea aioli. 4/5 scallops were perfect.
pork secreto with roasted peppers and watermelon. 2/5 – it was good, but honestly flavors were boring and my least favorite of the night.
and for dessert the famous JLT – pork jowl, tomato, frisee and a duck egg on top. Had a bit too much mannoisaise at the bottom. 4/5 – so rich, not sure you should end on this. Gave me a stomach ache and a giant shite upon arrival at home. But it was great.
B/c much of the dining is communal, ended up next to a kind Auburn alum who let me try his fried pig ear. Really didn’t think it tasted that great. Just like really fatty French fries. Overall, loved PURPLE PIG
SATURDAY
Saturday I started with a full stomach but that wasn’t going to stop me. I read last week that the only Lettuce Entertain You restaurant that got a Bib Gourmand award was Beatrix. I’d never been there before, so why not. Upon arriving you see that this place is where good looking people eat. Half the waitresses have implants and are obnoxious about flaunting them. It’s a very hip scene. I got the eggs your way below
the eggs weren’t so great – just average. The bread was very nice. The chicken sausage was great. The hashbrown was pretty good. My companion got the bbq pork egg sandwich and she said it was very good.
From there, my friend said she wanted to go to Eataly. I despise this place. It’s a tourist trap. But while there, Mastercard was running a promotion #PRICELESS and eI nded up being the first person in line in their gift vending machine and scored a Vergnano espresso and bamboo chopping board. Yes! And those are my new shoes too at the bottom for you Outdoor Board readers.
For lunch after shopping, we made the short walk over to the Tribune Tower to HOWELLS AND HOOD. This place is known more for its beer than food, but she wanted to try it. I followed.
We started with a great cheesy guacamole dish and fried calamari. Calamari wasn’t great. Then I got the grilled chicken club, that was pretty darn tasty. The fries that came with it weren’t too great. Finished it off with butterscotch bread pudding. Not very good. I would not return to this restaurant. Food just wasn’t worth it
For dinner, had an event at Smith and Wollensky’s overlooking the river. Even though this would mean I would miss half the LSU Bama game (refs gave that game to Bama so many times) my attendance was required. I don’t really like S&W’s either. This night the food was pretty good, better than usual at least. We started with the seafood tower. Luckily I was at a table that wasn’t big on seafood, so I got 3 plates identical to this one. The jumbo lump was by far the winner of this spread. The rest were good, but not spectacular.
Then it was on to the Wollensky salad, which sometimes is good, but Saturday it was very lame and the bacon I had was pure fat. GROSS! No pic necessary.
I got the prime filet last night and it was about 12-14 oz of meat. I ordered rare to blue because S&W’s steaks are very dry and the cooks manage to overcook it. It was cooked just as I like it – prob rare to med-rare at most restaurants. It was good, but not like my steak at Neiman Marcus the day before. The mashed and mushrooms are always good thanks to obscene amounts of butter and salt. Dinner ended with their chocolate cake and berries which was dry and pretty tasteless. Overall, S&W’s is good for group functions, but the food just isn’t worth the price. This would have cost $200 plus by myself with wine, but I wasn’t paying so how can I complain too much? BTW, they serve Cokes in the bottles and they also have paper straws, another marginal win for the night. I wont even talk about the rest of the evening because it pains me so.

SUNDAY
I'm gonna be straight with you. I was fricking pissed about the LSU Bama game on Saturday night. FRICKING PISSED. Those fricking Bama refs gave that game away. FRICKING CALL THE FBI ON THOSE CHEATING BASTARDS. And Sunday morning I was still pissed as a cat that just got his tail chopped off by a vending machine.
But that's just meant I needed more soul cleansing. I’m not a Catholic like arse, so I went to nearby 4th Presbyterian Church. Beautiful building – it was the church in my Best Friends Wedding. They have a new female preacher – Sharon Kirshner – and she is really good. Brings a great message every week and the music is some of the best choral music in aMerica. I admit I was posting up on the Rant cursing bama fans and bama refs. Lord have mercy on my angry arse.
After church, headed a block north to a place called DOC B's FRESH KITCHEN. I actually had never noticed this place, but it looked hip and I needed something new and probably something healthy. The place has a trendy feel inside. Lots of grainy wood and sparse leather chair backs and booths. Bright with a normal-loud noise level, the kitchen is in the back, elevated. Service was quick and clean. I opted for the healthier The Plate: quinoa, kale, spinach, grilled artichoke, & brussels sprouts.
Healthier than most of the menu items, but still had an arse load of sodium and butter/oil. Tasted pretty good, but I'm in no hurry to return. Little pricey for what it is, but that's the Gold Coast for you.
Another friend heard about my Master Card conquests at Eataly the day before and asked me to go with him. So we went. After setting up a second fake Twitter account (who of sound mind uses Twitter?). This time I won a chocolate bar that had a caramel-hazelnut filling. It was aight.
Again, OB foot in picture.
This fat arse doesn't like the NFL and I was still stewing even after church and lunch about the Bama-SEC conspiracy. So I walked around town. It was still nice, as it was today, and it's supposed to get cold as frick tomorrow lasting into May I'm sure in this God forsaken hell hole of a city. So I walked my arse around for 3 hours. Had to prepare for my second visit to GIRL AND GOAT. Probably should have walked there, but decided to drive. Such a pain in the arse to park even on Sunday night though.
I guess I should consider myself privileged to get a reservation the same day at that restaurant. Since opening in 2010, it has been one of Chicago's hottest restaurants with reservations in the summer on the weekend next to impossible to get. But Sunday night in November it's a little easier.
A group of 3 of us sat at the table and all items were group-family style sharing. We started with two of their bread items. First, the johnny applecheese bread with chili cheddar butter and melted butter.
dam tasty 4/5
We were so impressed by that bread we chose the salsiccia later bread with a fennel stout butter and pepper mustard relish. Our waitress told us that it was the first time this dish had ever been offered. A local sausage was incorporated into the bread and tasted of a ballpark frank, which I personally don't like. You're aware of how I dislike hotdogs and the now closed Hot Doug's. The popularity of foods like hot dogs in Chicago is one of the reasons I have declared Chicago a city for culinary neophytisim. Or something like that. I could show u a picture of that bread, but it's bread and dipping sauces. Unimpressive. Just imagine the first pic with a yellow mustardy dip too.
Next we moved to the hamachi crude - yellowtail with crisp pork belly. The small amount served was delicious but very unsatisfying due to its tiny size. If there was 1 oz of yellowtail on the entire dish, I'd have been surprised. 3/5
You order all your menu items at once here so they can decide how to bring your food out at least that's what the waitress said. Our next dish was the cauliflower roasted with peppers, mint and pine nuts. Such great flavor, this was my favorite dish of the night 4/5!
Goat loin was next. This was with root vegetables, spaghetti squash and was quite delightful. The goat was served rare and had a taste similar to lamb but a little earthier and wilder tasting.
Pan seared diver scallops were next to the belly.
This dish also had cubano pork and apple and pepper jelly. It was also delicious - 4/5!
We went heavy with the next dish - the house signature dish - the braised pork shank with buttermilk, kimchee sweet potatoes and mushrooms, and naan. I only got this b/c it was recommended. It was pretty good. But the meat was pretty fatty and not that much better than a good pig leg at a pig roast. It was 2x as much as the other dishes, but the flavors weren't really there. Though it's very filling. 3/5
not sure why they chose the next dish to be the broccoli and blue cheese, but they did.
This was the least good dish of the night - 2/5. Much of it was far too smokey tasting and dry, maybe even burned. The blue cheese was very sparse. Would not get again.
Our waitress chose the confit goat belly with bourbon butter, lobster and crab and fennel as our last dish. And this was wisely placed - it was a light and whimsical way to end the evening of heavy, fatty foods. It had so many flavors I dont know how to describe them.
4/5
By the time we finished eating, even though they were bringing out dishes as soon as we finished others, it was 930. The place was still packed - not a table open and they were still sitting people. The late time on a Sunday almost stopped us from getting a dessert, but we thought the wiser and got the PBJ dessert. It had a local ice creamery granita with housemade cookies and a jam. Also had some great fresh donut balls.
We didn't get out til 10ish and they were still seating tables. Bar was packed and not a seat open. I guess we got lucky with the same day reservations. Honestly, though was not terribly impressed by Girl and Goat. Purple Pig was better.
And thus ends that great Chicago fatArse eating adventure. Hope you enjoyed it and thanks to fat arsenclarse for letting me post this. We should do a joint venture if he's ever up in Chicago. I will hook you up broseph!
I must confess I went back to Neiman Marcus's restaurant today for lunch. Got the chicken Milanese and wasn't that good. The popovers and broth though were exceptional.
Stay fat arses!
