Everything that is wrong with America’s food ignorance rolled up into one

Why frozen peas are better than fresh peas.
Explains a lot of why you see people forego fresh vegetables that are in season in the produce section of the grocery store, farmers market, or produce stand to get frozen instead. When things are in season, you purchase in season. Frozen and canned are for out of season. How is this news?
It’s nothing to do with being “fancy”. Don’t overcook peas. It’s not like the frozen peas are some different variety of peas that don’t get mushy. They were just frozen and were thawing when you added them to the chowder, so you didn’t overcook them like you did the fresh peas. How did Suzy Q’s article make it to this site?
where has romance ever come into cooking frickin peas?

I recently tried to make a spring chowder with fresh English peas in it, and the soup was a weird, mushy mess until I switched to frozen sweet peas. My first go at this braised leeks and peas dish for Easter was a disaster because I tried to be fancy and use fresh peas—and again once I switched to frozen peas, everything was better.

So, hey, I'm sorry, fresh peas. You should know that I really did want to love you. You're so pretty and romantic in the spring. But I need a dependable partner in the kitchen, so from now on, frozen peas are it for me.

I honestly didn’t know fresh peas were even available.

My first thought as well.

you say that because one person doesn't know how to cook fresh peas
over-exaggerate much

Never seen them that I know of.

Article should be titled. I think I know how to cook but really I just keep fricking up these peas.

I shucked a lot of peas growing up.

I'm not gonna eat today because of this

It’s not an exaggeration to say America has a food ignorance, and it’s not to say every individual is food ignorant. It’s just that this is an example of the hordes of Americans who are simply food ignorant.

Because your dumbass followed a recipe for frozen but used fresh and overcooked them.
Idiots blaming their own lack of common sense on an inanimate object.

Well Frozen are always in season. They're flash frozen on site, so in many ways they are way better than anything you get fresh at the store. I buy fresh most of the time myself but i don't hate on anyone for buying frozen
I only use frozen peas. I don't eat them often and i like them to "cook" as they defrost so they never get mushy. I'll throw them in the last minute of a stir fry and they're great

Just as healthy as fresh and often more easy to cook with and convenient.

You could find a lot better examples of our food problems than this

Frozen peas make better purées

Mike often seems to miss the forest for the trees.
Pretty much any chef worth his salt will tell you that frozen green peas are one food product that is just as good, if not often superior, to what you will ever be able to find "fresh."

I didn’t identify a food problem. I identified a food ignorance, and not understanding why the mush happened is indicative of just that.

Do you really think the “fresh” vegetables in the produce aisle were picked just the day or two prior?
Frozen is often better quality than what you get in the produce department.

You found one person who messed up a dish.

I have about a dozen Green Arrow bush garden peas (English peas) growing and they will be ready in a couple of weeks. They come early and fast and are very good but will die out with the heat. They don’t last long. Once that little batch of fresh peas are gone it’s frozen for the rest of the year. If you don’t grow them they are very hard to find.
