I ate that a lot at one of my aunts houses as a kid. Times were tough and you put stuff on the table that could fill your belly----and most of the time it was not fine dining, just food for the hungry. Oh, and much appreciated too.

Yes!
we were invited to a friend's house for Yankee chili...made with ..shite nutmeg? It was awful, served over cold spaghetti and we had to sit there and pretend to eat.

The only issues I have are with my elderly parents. My mom does some stupid crap these days with food as she tries to be cheap and doesn't think things through very well and half the time we end up with bad food. She even make margaritas for us one day by pouring margarita wine coolers over ice in a blender.
I still love having her still be cooking for me as she was a pretty good country cook growing up and I'm thankful.
One of my good friends use to own a restaurant, one was a chef for a long time, and one is just a damn good all around cook. I love when any of them invite us over.
