Yesterday went to get breakfast at a local place we've never been to.

I got the breakfast sandwich which was $6,wife got two eggs breakfast for $5. We each got coffee and I added on hash browns with cheese.
The server was nice and it was easter so when she pushed a brownie basket, I said yes.

Bill comes it's $40.

$40 isn't bad to eat out. But when you have two $3 coffees and $5 meals it felt high. Then there was no itemization on the receipt. Just had the total.

With brownies it should have been 20 something tops.

Just paid bill, tipped normally and left.

Either I got the most expensive hash browns ever or I was scammed out of $15.

She cleaned you out like a salad plate in a commercial dishwasher.

That's probably $19 right there. $3 coffees and a $2 side of hash browns.

This only needed to be $8 to get you to $37 which with tax would be $40.

Yes, it’s happened to me. This is one reason I like restaurants with clearly written out specials. It’s not hard to use table tents, chalkboard signs, and menu inserts. It’s also a staff training issue—when mentioning desserts, why not clearly state the price? While it might be considered gauche in a fine dining setting, I’d think it would be SOP in a diner or casual establishment. Even the best dining experience can be ruined by a surprise on the check.

Yes - I am certain it has happened.

Sad thing is I let it pass without saying anything because I was reluctant to raise a stink about it.

I'm just a chump I guess.

You must’ve read over the .99 at the end of each.

5.99, 6.99, 3,3, 2.99, .99....that is 23 bucks there so I don’t know where you got 20 dollars as your top end

And my estimates don’t include the brownies.

An entire basket of brownies? $13 easily if it came from a restaurant

But I won’t pay for anything unless I can see an itemized receipt

I am overcharged every time my wife and I decide to eat out for lunch or dinner.

Lunch @ St. James Cheese Saturday was $30 for a sandwich and salad.

Were their not prices on the menu?

I can't recall ever having a sit-down meal at a place that didn't have an itemized receipt. Even places that take only cash and give you simply the order ticket, you can still figure out what the prices were and add them up.

Yes. We made the mistake of eating at Lulu’s restaurant in Destin, Fl. We receive the bill only to find that a 2% “Village Tax” was added to our receipt

When asked about the tax it was explained to us that the restaurant leases the land and in turn they pass the charge on to the consumer. I couldn’t find it anywhere on the menu, not even in any sort of small print. It was only mentioned by the waitress after the check was given to me and later when we found the same thing on Yelp from past diners.

Thought it was pretty shitty way to handle the situation. I wonder how many diners have paid it without even knowing?

Chinese take-out places are notorious for overcharging. Oriental Pearl on Sherwood/Coursey did that shite 3x to me.

That's horse crap. That's a cost of doing business and they need to include it in the prices. How do they even know if 2 percent of the bill is enough to cover the rental costs?

I know some developments charge additional sales tax that goes to the developer, but it's all places in the development and you generally are aware of it.

At first, I thought you were talking about PaneraBread. That's the most expensive place in the world. 2 salads, 2 drinks and a kids mac and cheese = $44.00

So every person that eats there pays an extra tax for their rent? That’s fricked up

That was my thought at the end of the dinner. Now the funny thing is the place is huge. Lulu is the sister of Jimmy Buffett. Place looks and feels like Margaritaville in reference to size. I couldn’t begin to compute how many diners walk through the place in one day.

That's probably why no one laughed.

I was trying to be sarcastic with an $18 plate of brownies.

Happened to me at Ernests in Shreveport. What should have been a $1000 turned out to be $3000. Some of it was fudging the numbers, some was straight up lies.
