Yeah but it was probably $6.75, $5.95, etc before tax. I tend to think this way when ordering multiple things and think it seems a bit high but those cents after the dollar amount add up if getting 5 things. Then you add tax and boom you are at $40.

I guess. I just didn't like that it wasn't itemized. Just had the price due. I handed the card and didn't look until after.
Just expected $28ish

In order to be a waiter for life, Lifer, as we called them you have to make a lot of bad decisions in life. Many of them are simply, I think I'm gonna smoke another bowl instead of going to work right now.

So yes, check your receipts. Check that your tips add up. You'd be amazed how many times a waiter will turn a $11 tip into a $17 tip. That kind of thing.

Now, as said after tax we could be talking about just $4-5 difference. Waiter for life could have easily used poor math and counted your egg breakfast twice.

ETA: If you paid with a CC then its doubtful it was done on purpose. Hard to scam a CC payment. Cash, whole different story.

Waiters at high end places probably make more than you do, and they're certainly waiters for life.

Seriously? I know plenty of hardworking front of house service people who haven't made "a lot of bad decisions" to get where they are. They're doing honest, necessary work, are appreciated and respected by good customers, and are an essential cog in any restaurant. You can have the best food in the world, but your business will fold over lousy service.

I'll never understand so-called "hardworking" people who denigrate the work of others.

I've worked at some of those places. I waited tables for over 10 years. I'm very familiar with it.

Almost every Lifer passed up a management role if they were worth anything because being an assistant manager pays less than being a waiter. Except the end game isn't being the new assistant manager, its being the GM.

We aren't talking about a high end place anyway. We are talking about a cafe or diner. My point stands. I'm not saying they are all bad people by any means.

I'm simply stating mistakes and theft would not be uncommon. Truth hurts sometimes.

Here is a picture of the menu from yelp...

Breakfast Sandwich -$6
2 Eggs Breakfast - $8
Side of Hash Browns - $2.75
Add Cheese - $1.25 (guessing)
2 coffees - $6 (not on menu but based on your estimates)
"Brownie Basket" - $10 (I have no idea what the brownie basket looks like but I guess $10 is a minimum).

Total is $34 plus tax (~$37.50).

She may have thrown on an extra drink or an extra cheese or something, but regardless, $40 doesn't seem egregious based on what you ordered...
