I could be wrong but I remember it being Booties, wasn't that supposed to be a sort of Hooter's competitor? I was probably 8-10ish back then so my parents never would take us there.

ETA: reddit says it was...

Payless(shoes I guess?)
Toucans
Booties
Bako's
Serranos
Mellow Mushroom
Dragos

Payless? For real? I wonder if that’s when the Real Superstore was where The Grand is.

You forgot the US Border Cantina and Grill that was there sometime in early / mid 90s.

If I remember correctly, the current building was built by/ for Serranos then subleased to Bako's

Same with Drago's. Don's may have an inferior product

Dragos does better chargrilled oysters.

But I’ll take pretty much every other menu item on Don’s over the other items Dragos offers.

Don's has a great atmosphere. Walking into Drago's Lafayette felt like walking into a fancy Ryan's Steakhouse with operating room lighting.

This.

Dragos: Better chargrilled oysters.

Don’s: Better everything else food, better drinks, better atmosphere.

Has the future for Don's downtown been publicly announced yet?

They were advertising for employees in March of 96 and shut down on Jan 3, 1997. Very short lived.

The Real Superstore and the Johnston Street location of Veron’s were also closing at that time, according to the Jan 3, 1997 edition of the Daily Advertiser.

My mother only shopped there up until it closed. The butchers would always give you some little smokies when you went to the butcher counter. Fond memories of childhood spent in that store.

Agreed.. and Don's Crawfish Bisque is out of this world.

Absolutely. The high ceilings, wood rafters, floor to ceiling windows, and a well to do, country club vibe..

Of all the places that have been in that location the above was by far my favorite .

Taco and Margarita Tuesday

1 dollar margaritas and 50 cent taco

And they were both awesome

I remember them giving out the Little Smokies.

I was friends with Max Langlinais (Max’s Pool Hall) in college. His dad owned Adrien’s grocery stores, and at the time, Adrien’s and Veron’s were competitive, as far as the best meat, steaks, etc. I shopped at Adrien’s, mostly, not Veron’s, because of Max.

Remember the old joke, "how many cans of gasoline were used to burn down that restaurant?

"2 cans"

Was that referring to his first restaurant that burned, Mi Anita’s or a similar name?

If memory serves me, I remember that yes, it was BOTH restaurants that burned down. That's why everyone thought it had to be arson? I do not recall the first ones name?

you probably knew Max's sister Wanda. Her mom Ms. Udalie who is gotta be close to 90 yrs old, owns the hair salon on W. Pinhook that is part of the Langinais commercial real estate property .... strip shopping center with Max's, T-Coon's, former LA Pizza Kitchen, Chris' ???? , and the side businesses. There's an old house on that property, (behind Max's) pretty sure that's where the Langlinais family grew up. FYI - Adriennes still has the best baked French bread in LAF, but you already knew that

I guess I'm losing my memory but I don't even remember it burning down ? I remember the Wal-Mart on Johnston, and just south of the Wal-Mart, a large Coburn / welding type store, large warehouse, burning a few years prior to that.

that property is owned by the Judice's and under contract to Drago's. Tommy will still be paying a monthly lease note until the next restaurant moves in. I think his lease was for 10 years.

When my friend Todd (owner) closed Mellow Mushroom, he was legally bound to paying the monthly lease agreement. The only thing that saved him was Tommy C wanting to expand Drago's into the LAF market and agreeing to take over the lease agreement with a newly worded contract.

Perhaps they'll open another El Paso in that location which would probably succeed.
