quote:
has nothing to do with realizing that the foods you are feeding your dog are terrible. let me ask you this, are those foods good for humans?
Some yes, others no. I eat rice, chicken, beans, etc. My dogs eat them. I don't have a sweet tooth, myself, but my wife eats fried chicken skin and sugar cookies. She's 5-7, 116 and runs 10Ks.
quote:
pretty much the exact opposite.
Then, tell us how long your dogs have lived? You were the one who made the charge that I shortened my dog's lives. My dogs have ALL outlived their expectancy. Answer the question.
quote:
that has nothing to do with what you should be feeding your dog. and you do realize that your regular old domestic dog is not like a wolf in the wild.
It has everything to do with a dog's biology. I have retrievers. They are not that far removed from wolves (compared to a toy poodle). The basic digestive system of a dog hasn't changed for 1,000 years.

this conversation is going no where.
Translation: I'm feeling stupid.
quote:
just go google "table food for dogs" and every legit site that comes up is basically saying what you are doing/saying is wrong.
I don't need to 'go' google. I researched dog nutrition in the 60s before google existed.
quote:
Avoid fatty foods like chicken skin, or the scraps of fat you've trimmed off your dinner steak, as well as high-sugar foods like candy and baked goods.
Ah, you're slow. Let us review:
1. Chicken skin and baked goods are NOT their main menu. I've never given them candy. That's odd.
2. Since my menu is so bad how is it that they have all outlived their life expectancy by such a large margin?

doesnt take away from the fact that those foods are not good for you.

i simply made a comment about how you feed your dogs some terrible food.

scary to think that maybe people have done some more recent research than your studies in the 60s.

i was simply taking a quote about how sugar is bad for them considering you said this in the OP "Sweets... especially sugar cookies. "

Getting out of bed can kill you, staying in it can kill you, you are going to die, choose wisely how you want to live and what you want your life to mean in the end. If you want to live like a scared little mommas boy, stay at home. There is nothing quite like sitting in the waiting room, you just sit waiting for the announcements.

This place has better threads that the shitpot OT for sure.
This place rocks!
I still wish we had some sort of way to talk about things other than food with the F&D group. I realize it is not practical and would likely just degenerate into a mini ot.

After reading through this thread,
I can't stand people that treat their dogs like they would treat one of their own children. That's how you create a neurotic monster, not a good pet. My gf and her family treat their 5lbs Maltipoo like a kid, drives me nuts. They used to feed her 3 or 4 strips of bacon nearly every morning, save her a plate of whatever they ate (not leftovers, literally make enough to give some to the dog), never yell at the dog because they are scared it will hurt her feelings, etc etc. It's insane. It's a dog, not a human.

ATL, note my post above, I was able to toss in bit of philosophy into the sophistry of whether some foods were "good for you" argumentation. I do try to keep it clean, but on the poli I am brutal although the chocolate thread had a pinch of it.

Yes it was quite Mike Da Tigahish.
I stay away from the Poli and the OT. I have enough stress with work, life and LSU football without looking for it with those nut boards.

I stop shy of sugar cookies and whatnot. But if I have leftover meat, potaters, or bread, it's going to the dogs. Not bad for them in the least. TH

Nope, you said I must want to shorten my dog's life. Go back and read your quote. But let's not quibble. For the third time...How is it that my dogs have all outlived their life expectancy per breed by a significant number of years? You really don't have an explanation for that do you? And you still haven't told us how long your dogs have lived. Have you ever even had a dog?
quote:

Exact opposite. Modern nutritionists realize that people food is much better for dogs. Dog food is processed crud. It's cheap. They'll eat it. But it's not good for them.

Cookies are not candy. Cookies are a derivative of bread. Dogs love tookies. If my dog only has 17 years to live, he's gonna have some tookies. Always careful to make sure there is no chocolate in the tookies. Also, no nuts. Some nuts don't agree with their digestive system.
And NEVER grapes or raisins.

Well, we've never had a small dog. All of ours have been 60-90 pound labs. Coddling them has resulted in human like behavior. IE, my eldest Golden throws a 'pity party' every day. He sits on the couch, rolls over on his back and howls in pain.
He's not hungry. He just wants us to say "Poor dog" and pet him. When we stop petting he moans louder. It's actually pretty funny.

He's got you trained brah, food and comfort. What more could a dog ask for?

I don't understand people that do not sleep with their dogs in bed/same room.
Dogs are pack animals and should sleep with humans in bed.

Mine do, they make nice toe warmers in the winter.

My dogs eat dog food because they are dogs. Dogs are not people.

When you treat them like family, you feed them like family.
