I was getting my hairs did yesterday and the place I go to is near the new TJ that opened up in October. I've never been but I like Whole Foods and people told me to think WF but much smaller and reasonable.

I went yesterday and I have to say they were spot on. I bought a few items to snack on (lobster bisque, Vietnamese chicken wrap, candied ginger, Belgian chocolate pudding, the famous cookie butter, etc). It's all been very good for the things I've tried and for everything I bought I spent around $25. My barber told me not to expect a grocery store, but after walking through it, it very much is a grocery store. A small one but they have everything you really need.

Because of where I live, I do all my grocery shopping at Target or Winn Dixie. I'm getting tired of the crowd at both. TJ was filled with a few older people and young, yuppie families. I can live with that.

But what really impressed me were the prices. They're reasonable. Very reasonable. Not WF prices (like $7 for eggs and $17 for chicken thighs). I was looking at all the prices and really thought they were cheaper/comparable to Target and Winn Dixie.

So does anyone here do all their shopping at TJ? I'm thinking about making the switch.

I can't imagine doing all my grocery shopping there, because the selection is still limited. If it was just me then I'd be more inclined to do a lot more shopping there.

But I also found their prices pretty reasonable for a lot of things--pasta & sauces are really good prices, bread and dairy stuff were good too. Even some of their more exotic fresh vegetables weren't outrageously priced.

That isn't what I consider "grocery shopping."

I don't either. I already did my grocery shopping the other day and am stocked up. I just wanted to try a few things they had.

But as far as their selection, they have a full produce section. Their meat section had good choices. Same with dairy and other things needed for normal groceries.

As stated, I was surprised at just how much they had.

We get a lot of stuff there, but I couldn't see doing all of my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. They don't sell Diet Cokes and they have a pretty limited selection of items

I'd say comparing what you get for what you pay for at say Winn Dixie (which I hate going to), TJ's is a better value.

Two Buck Chuck will replace that Diet Coke habit

But seriously, I usually plan my meals for the week and go grocery shopping accordingly. Looking at the selection at TJ's, it was more than enough to plan meals. And their frozen seafood selection was nice.

Also when you walk in, they sell huge flower arrangements for like $3.99-$5.99. I buy flowers for my wife on occasion and just those prices were enough the make me raise an eyebrow.

WD is my go to for convenience and price but their produce selection leaves a great deal to be desired. They wanted 3 something a lb. for honey crisp apples last time I was in there. And their claim to be the "beef people?" Yeah...if you like blade steaks from starving dairy cows.

All of that is so spot on.

And their "cold food section" they set aside so the LA Purchase Card crowd can buy already cooked items. I go to that section first and snatch up anything that's good (like dem chicken wings)

I do a lot of my shopping at TJ's. I still pop in to whole foods or target every couple of weeks for a few things, but not nearly as often as I used to.

Try shopping at other grocers locally or chained owned and operated if WD doesn't do it for you. Yeesh is that too hard to think about and do?

I have a few friend's that have said similar things as the OP. I still haven't been to the one in BR [I've only been to the Mandeville one a handful of times].

That side of town definitely needed a store like TJ's.

Whole foods doesn't sell diet coke either but I can grocery shop there no problem. Never been to trader Joe's but I can't shop at walmart. How do you grocery shop when you can't buy meat or produce?

They have meat and produce at TJ's, but it's a limited selection. I couldn't imagine doing all of my shopping there, but that side of town has a real lack of quality grocery stores. The Bet-R is awful for meat (especially deli meat) and their prices are kinda high for an AG store. At least they have good plate lunches, but they're not any better (or even better priced) than Zealand Street Market up the street. Sadly, Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market may be the best in the area and their produce is mediocre at best. I'm thinking that maybe I should drive the extra distance to Matherne's or pay the higher prices at Calandro's.

I would, but it's on the other side of town for me and the Kroger close enough to me is far more convenient. Also a lot less crowded. The TJ here can get nuts because there's only one, it's right by the exit, and on a major road so it gets a lot of foot traffic.

It seems going on a Saturday morning at 10:00 AM was the way to go.

And as far as the selection of meats and produce, I saw various fruits/veggies and also the meats I saw pretty much all the staples, including some great looking lamb cuts.

I don't know, I'm gonna give it a whirl next week.

The one in BR has similar issues.

Surprisingly I haven't heard of it being crazy busy.

We have one right down the street.... I find it very meh and I find the crowd there is "different" (no big deal though). I've heard people complain about the amount of people in TJs but ours doesn't seem to be any more busy that HEB or anything.

I find that most of the prepared dishes cater to people that are into that type of "different" taste.

It is what it is though. I'll probably stop in once every other month or so but I could never do all of my shopping at a place like that.

I hated Trader Joe's. It was too small, too packed, and nothing but packaged items. There's no way I could go in there with a list and find what I need.

The produce looked like shite and there was no real meat department.

If all I ate were frozen meals and snacks, I could shop there.
