Do you salt & pepper before even trying your food?

Spin off from things managers need to know thread.
It has always bugged me to watch someone just salt & pepper (or worse, drown it in hot sauce) before even trying it. I know, it's their food, let them do as they like.
I believe a fine dining restaurant shouldn't even have salt & pepper on the table. Ordering a high dollar meal prepared by chefs and then changing the taste of the food is something I just cannot fathom.

Only if I cook it because I know how much seasoning I have in the food beforehand. My wife doesn't have the taste for salt or pepper like I do, so I cook food to her liking and add whatever seasonings make me happy.
Same with hot sauce/peppers, etc. I make my own hot sauces and can tolerate those far more so than my wife and will only add it to food after it is cooked.
That way, everybody's happy.

I salt & pepper my green salads because they don't usually come seasoned. Rarely does an entree need more salt in south Louisiana, so I don't add anything until after tasting.

I sometimes pepper salads before tasting and French fries. I always accept fresh cracked pepper from a waiter before tasting. I add both S & P to baked potatoes, eggs and the like before tasting.

A now deceased good friend of mine told me how he once got severely admonished by his sister-in-law when she put a plate of her home cooked food in front of him.
He was a very heavy salt user and had the habit of not tasting his food beforehand and adding a liberal amount of salt to everything he ate. He said she read him the riot act and called him rude and inconsiderate to do that without first tasting the food to see if it needed any more seasoning.
He stayed here in N.O. with the wife and I after Hurricane Katrina since he lived out of state and work had dried up where he was. He was here for almost 8 months and ate with us every night and my wife would freak out at the amount of salt he added to his food. She though I was bad until she sat at the table with him.

Hadn't thought about it, but yes to eggs and potatoes.

Most don’t

Salt doesn’t change the taste, just enhances it. Pepper does, but it’s personal preference, so why do you care what others prefer?

Almost never. Even when I'm cooking, I don't add salt or pepper before tasting.
For things like eggs, popcorn, etc. that I made myself that just taste like arse without salt, I'll add some before tasting and then add more if needed after tasting. If someone is serving me, though, I'll taste first before reaching for the shaker.
For me, it's not so much to avoid being rude, but to avoid having to eat a plate of food with enough salt to make a mummy.

Not unless I cooked it and know how well something is seasoned. I do season eggs, french fries and bland foods I know aren't to my liking.

Not on prepared foods and I only use salt for grilling (beef)purposes, when needed.

No but I do grab the bottle of A1 before I taste my steak

And ruin a good piece of meat.

Eggs get black pepper and red beans and rice always gets a touch of hot sauce. I cook my eggs in bacon grease so salt is not needed.

I pepper salads because you can tell they don't have pepper on them
I don't salt anything beforehand and rarely afterwards

Depends on the setting, but I do do it on occasion.
I also love spicy food. I have no problem throwing some jalapeños or fresh peppers on top of any dish put in front of me. I’ll also add some hot sauce before tasting, but none of that shitty Tabasco or Louisiana. I like the homemade stuff that I control the taste of.

I don’t even have salt and pepper on the table at home. Couldn’t tell you the last time I’ve used either out on the actual plate rather than cooking. I season as I cook and taste as I go.

There are certain things that I put hot sauce on before tasting. I love the taste of Tiger Sauce on red beans and rice or chicken and dumplings.

I generally put Slap Your Mama (if available) on things without trying. Also, I like alot of black pepper on my veggies, so I always add before trying.
I really don't care what others do to their food. Kinda like the kid in "To Kill a Mockingbird" that puts sorghum syrup on everything and Atticus gets onto Scout for asking "what the Sam Hill are you doing."
It's their food, so let them eat it how they want. If they want to order a well done filet mignon and put A1 on it, they have the freedom to because they are the customer and end user.
