sigh.. I'm sorry, I erroneously assumed that anyone who posts on the food board must know how to use the broiler setting in their oven.
That still seems like more effort than toast is worth.

Also, you're still only cooking one side of the bread. Now you just have one-sided broiled bread slices.

Even still, toasters are quicker. By the time you wait for the broiler heat up, and...
quote:

butter the toast and put it on a cookie sheet. Move one of the racks in your oven to the slats that are nearest the top of the oven, which will be at most a couple of inches below the broiler element. Put the cookie sheet on the top rack. If you have a decent oven your toast will be ready in about 90 seconds.
I'll already be done eating my toast.

Furthermore, toasters make more efficient use of equipment. I don't need a special tray to lay my bread on to put it in the toaster. After you're done making "toast" in the oven, you now have a dirty cookie sheet to clean.

Imagine heating a whole oven and dirtying a whole cookie sheet just for a couple slices of toast? This is a complete misallocation of resources.

Toasters are far superior for making toast than the oven.

Seconded. I just use butter but the result is like Cane's toast; crispy outside soft inside. In order for toaster or oven to get the same crust I find it turns into a brick or crumbs up.

I happen to like one sided toast, thus my preference for making it in the oven. It's easier to bend so you can sop up the runny egg yolk.

Also, you dont have to wait that long for the oven to heat up, you just turn it to broil and put in the toast. its not like you are waiting for it to preheat to 350.

You solve the dirty cookie sheet problem with a piece of foil that you put the toast on, so no cleanup. Im sure that is a waste of a valuable resource but its worth it IMO.

Anyway, continue to use your toaster and I'll continue to use the oven...

That's exactly how I like toast for my eggs.

I don't have a toaster oven. I have a small cheap toaster that rarely gets used. I like the way it turns out in my oven. Different strokes etc...

I mean, except for the fact that you need another piece of equipment just to toast the bread. It even has its own name because that's what it does (and all it does). Seem less efficient to me.

This thread begs the question of what is toast.

IMO the OP is using the oven to toast one side of bread but is not making toast. The definition of toast as a noun is:

quote:

sliced bread browned on both sides by exposure to radiant heat.

A toaster is the most efficient tool for making toast because it is basically a one-trick pony. If fails generally if you want to melt butter or cheese into the toast while toasting it. One of the many versions of a toaster oven/multi-function air fryer does that very efficiently. If you want one side toasted and the other not toasted then a toaster oven with a solid tray and using the broil feature would be the most efficient tool for the job.

Using a full-sized oven on broil is inefficient both in energy and time compared to the other options (unless you are making more than a few slices but it does accomplish what the OP wants, but what the OP likes is not toast.

Larousse Gastronomique expressly provides that toast also includes bread "grilled under the grill (broiler)".

Several people have posted about time. First of all, I don't necessarily care that much about energy efficiency when I'm cooking. As far as time, I'm more of a protein person, so I'm never making just toast. When I do make toast, it's a side for whatever main I'm preparing. The main will be cooking while the toast is under the broiler.

True story, Catherine de Medici invented the toaster and introduced it to France.

I don’t have a toaster, so it’s oven for me.

But growing up we would go to my grandparents farm and they would make the best toast on one of these:

Lately I've been doing it in a cast iron pan with melted butter but the toaster oven/air fryer deal has been the go to. If we still have a toaster it's hidden away somewhere.
