I forgot about Mr D's. I remember getting BBQ'd crabs there and waiting for an eternity, but they were awesome.
Yeah, Mr. D's was a huge family favorite. We loved it when it was crawfish season there.

That reminds me of Schilleleys (spelling) on Prien for some reason. I forgot about that place.
Yep. It was the same building. I have a matchbook from Schillileagh's too. That building is now called The Captain's Table, I haven't been there. Which is weird because I remember a place called the Captain's Table when I was a kid but it was at Ryan and Prien.

Lake Charles lacks good local cuisine period.
this guy is a fricking idiot
quote:
this is just wrong
when i was a kid? yeah it was right, but there are all sorts of local, non-chain options up to french fine dining (la truffe sauvage). there has been an explosion of good, local places the pat few years. the villa, 1910, mazens, etc. then the casinos have some good (and bad) chains. Ember and V/A are really good
now it's obviously no Nola or even Lafayette, but it blows BR/Shreveport out of the water per capita
LC has a bunch of great restruants and does blow the Port away but not BR. BR has a lot more good restruants than when you and I lived there. Per Capita maybe.
But in general the guy is an idiot, just off the top of my head I can name 10 places in LC that are as good as anywhere and thats not including the local seafood which is damn good
1) luna
2) 121
3) 1910
4) Villa Harliquen
5) Calla
6) Mazens
7) Embers
8) Country club at golden nugget
9) Darrels
10) Fire and Oak
11) Pats
12) la Truffe Sauvage
13) Leonards
14) Tonys
15) Cousins
Thats 15 with only naming the 1 main casino restruant plus the country club at golden nugget. All local and range from Very nice to a damn hot dog joint. Not even including the casino places, local hamburger and bbq joints, or the pioneer club.
Im not some LC is the greatest person but so many people shite on it without knowing a damn thing. Its not NOLA and that is a good thing. If you are a single guy who wants to party it up, LC isnt for you more than likely.
What LC does have
1) good public and private schools. Best AP program in the state and great HS sports.
2) good local university that is small with decent athletics most of the time.
3) great youth sports
4) great outdoors with some of the best salt water fishing in the US. great marsh fishing and Toledo is only an hour away.
5) with the casinos it has plenty of night life for the family guy
6) Great economy
7) very good local restruants for its size
8) outside of pretty much 2 areas, very low crime, especially in SLC.
9) Traffic is nothing in comparison to other cities due to a properly designed interstate system. Yes the I-10 bridge sucks but it usualyl doesnt hinder traffic too bad.
10) Low cost of living overall, atleast before the hurricane.
I can not stand when people say its east texas, its more like west lafayette in most ways. Anyone that sys this sounds like a fricking idiot and their opinion should immediately be disregarded as uninformed.
BTW if you are looking for boiled seafood, went to OBs last friday and the crabs, shrimp and crawfish were awesome. Best I have had in a long time in a restruant. Highly recommend, especially the dungness and snow crabs. Everything from presentation, to taste to service was spot the hell on.
also not the huge crowd seafood palace and beauxdines have.

I’ve also been to some podunk arse towns all over the country for work. LC is one of the shittiest places I’ve had to go.
explain what was so shitty about it?
Where did you live?
Are you single or have a family?
What restruants did you eat at?
What hobbies do you have that LC wouldnt allow you to do?

Good public schools? Really? There are a few decent ones, but overall the public schools are pretty awful.

Westlake, Sam Houston, Barbe are all A schools and barbe has the #1 AP program in the state. So yea pretty good. Sulphur has a very good AP program also. Plus all 4 of the above offer dual enrollment through McNeese as does St Louis.
Elmentary you have prien lake, nelson and ts cooley that are all good in LC, plus Moss bluff and westlake schools. Sulphur has a couple good ones.
Middle school- well you somewhat hav a point there but SJ is still decent, FK has a great great spark program and seperates teh students from rest of the population. Westlake and moss bluff have good middle schools.

Lake Charles and Lafayette are the only cities in LA that have really good non-magnet public schools
it's a reverse tax of living in the LC area where a $50k salary is even better because you aren't forced to send kids to public schools
look you want to say LC is boring? fine
you want to say it lacks "culture"? i'd say you have a definition of culture that is very narrow but within it, you're right
but it has good things like schools and restaurants. not the best or anything, but it's a city of like 70-80k (pre-laura at least) and a metro of only probably 225-250k

I’d put La Trouffe up there against most fine dining in Nola.
It’s not August or anything, but it’s better than Clancy’s

I knew I could count on lsu777 to bring his love for LC in this thread to tell me how stupid I am. You sir have Westlake as your town of residence...so I think you may be the stupid one. I mean there's blue vinyl or some shite seeping into all Westlake residents brains according to the documentary.
But to answer your questions..
Started in the shithole of sulphur for one year before buying a house in what I would consider Holmwood.
Have a wife and 2 children. But I was kidless when I moved there.
All of the ones that you have mentioned. I'm not sure that many would make it a BR, Nola, or Lafayette. Luna would have a chance, 121 is good as well.
Your golf scene is the only thing that I can give your shite town credit for. It is actually pretty good. Your hunting used to be good, but duck hunting has gone to shite in the past 10 years. I've been hunting gueydan for over 20 so trust me I know what it used to be like. You're fishing isn't bad, but you have lost your mind if you think its comparable to SELA. You DO NOT have the Miss River Delta and for god sake the continental shelf is like 90 miles from the coast so your offshore is near non-existent. Oh yea and your deer suck.

yea thats it, blue shite seeping everywhere. You are only stupid because you said LC is like east texas, they are nothing alike. More like a western laffayette.

well you lived in sulphur childless. Did you think LC area was anything other than a blue collar family town? there is plenty of night life if you have children though. and holmwood is kind of the middle of no where
Where are you originally from that is some mecca?

so wait you like luna and 121 but think the following arent worth a shite?
Calla
1910
villa
chart house
la truffe
wtf???? i mean i like luna and 121 is awesome but the places above are better.
But again what food wise was it missing that made it a "shite hole"

golf scene is good
salt water fishing in big lake is considered some of the best in the usa. If you prefer inshore in SE LA, that fine. They both are tops in the nation.
SElA is better offshore, but i go all the time in a bay boat when its calm and catch snapper, red and mangrove, cabia etc
Deer do suck, but they suck in all of south LA. Duck hunting aint what it used to be but better than 99% of places as is dove.
Im just asking what about it did you hate? what didnt it have that you were looking for?

In all honesty it's the people there that make that place terrible. They all think that THEY are the real Louisiana and that their shite is better than everyone else's because it's country and small town.
And on top of that it's like they all think their opinion matters. Like here's a news flash LC, not everyone in the world is a white conservative bible thumper. One very valuable thing I learned growing up in BR is to keep your opinion to yourself if you don't know someone well. There are too many different cultures mixed together in a larger city to be throwing around brash statements about your beliefs and opinions.
So if it wasn't for that...then I might be a little more enthusiastic about some of the things the city has to offer, but because of this I can't stand that fricking place.

I can actually agree with that. As much as LC people like to shite outside of the upper middle and upper class....it's not very welcoming to new people.

Damn, this thing got off the rails. Darrell's ain't for me. I expressed that and got downvoted to hell.
But overall Lake Charles is actually an economically growing part of Louisiana (the state kinda needs that right now), Big Lake/Turner's Bay/West Cove fishing is AWESOME, and I find the people from there and Sulphur generally to be some of the friendliest people in the country.

Anyone else enjoy the brisket at Darrell's? My go to if I'm not getting the special
