Cooking rice with your roast

I’ve always cooked my rice in a separate pot, then added it to my bowl of roast and gravy. I want to try cooking it in the same pot as my roast and gravy. I wonder if I’ll have enough gravy to make a decent size batch of rice. I also wonder if the rice will soak up all of the gravy.

Anyone else do this? Am I just an idiot? Is this how dirty rice is made?

That sounds like a terrible idea

Depending on how much fat renders from the roast I'd say you'd probably wind up with greasy rice in the end.

Use beef/pork broth to cook your rice.

After careful consideration, I’ve decided (all by myself) that this is probably a bad idea and I won’t try it

Sure you can do it, but it will be a mushy starchy mess, and potentially too salty. Rice needs a precise water/rice ratio to fluff—so it will likely soak up all the available gravy and you’ll be left with overseasoned gummy rice and little to no gravy.

The beauty of rice and gravy is in the contrast between the fluffy plain rice and the rich gravy. If you want jambalaya, make jambalaya.

It’s not exactly jambalaya, but it’s along the same lines. I’d soak up the grease before you put the rice in

I wouldn't recommend it for reasons already expressed.

I did this at the camp this weekend. It's not rice with roast, but it was cooking rice in with a bunch of other stuff, similar to jambalaya. But it wasn't jambalaya. :

Cooked bacon for breakfast. Afterwards I browned off a bunch of boneless, skinless chicken thighs in the bacon dripping. Then browned a lb of Richards andouille. Then sauteed some onions, garlic and jalapenos. Then I stirred in a little Kary's dark roux and thinned it out with some chicken stock. THen I dumped all that in a crock pot with some more chicken stock, some sliced button mushrooms, a can of rotel and some seasonings. Then I went a played golf. Came back 5 hours later and stirred in 2 lbs of brown rice. Then we went on the float boat for 3-4 hours. I had no idea what I would be walking into, and was not really worried about it because 1) I was hammered and 2) we had plenty of other stuff to eat. But the end result of my crock pot smothered sticky chicken and andouille conglomerate was really pretty damn good. And not just because I was hammmered. Others much more sober agreed as well. CSB
