Friend,

It is The Chinese Presbyterian Church, not Presbytrian (sic) Chinese Church. The congregation has a most fascinating history and the Lee family, of which Harry made famous, is a founding member and one of the most active families in that church. I believe he left his campaign war chest to the church when he died.

The Ngai family, proprietors of How Toy, which later became 5 Happiness, were also members of the church. Johnny Ngai Sr. was a great man and was related to Harry Lee by marriage. In other words, you will find some hidden treasures in that recipe book, including ones from lost New Orleans restaurants.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. Friend, you still have the name of the church incorrect in your title after your spelling edit. The Chinese Presbyterian Church.

What other members do you know owned restaurants? There are lots of Chinese surnames in the book.

You just can't help being a dick, can you?

The "The" of which you speak would not fit in the allotted space. Now why don't you leave this board alone?

Friend,

It is Chinese Presbyterian Church, not Presbyterian Chinese Church. The "the" is not the error. It is the order of the words. It is a simple edit for a typo. It would be like saying Catholic St. Christopher's Church. It is glaring, but simply a typo and not meant to cause offense.

I believe the Young's Fortune restaurant has roots in the Chinese Presbyterian Church.

Friend,

My correction was by no means meant to upset you. Your contributions here are well known, and this thread adds to your unrivaled contributions of esoteric and precious local cookbooks, which I hope you one day bequeath to a local library system. I am grateful for your contributions.

Friend,

Like Harry Lee often said, "If my choice is lying to you or offending you, I'm going to offend you, because you can forgive me for offending you, but you cannot forgive me for lying to you."

TSU - Rat certainly doesn’t need my help, but the responses he and others give to your offensive posts is that your shtick has grown really old. Why not take on another troll identity and give this one a rest.

Sorry rat. I have grown tired also.

Friend,

How could I have been any more polite or friendly in correcting the church's name in the original thread's title? Was the act of correcting in the kindest way possible a minor and unintended typo offensive? When someone corrects my typos, it has been my custom to thank them for it. Please read again what I wrote.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

You could keep your damn opinion to yourself. That would be a good start.

Rat, great post! I imagine it is out of print, but would you happen to have a link where the cookbook could possibly be purchased?

It was published in 1991, but I guess you could check if they still have copies available.

I have not seen any for sale online.

ETA: just checked in the back of the book and they have this form:

I doubt the price is still $8 though.

I know it's cultural, but the Hot and Sour Soup recipe gave me a chuckle with the "root ear fungus" ingredient. Don't see that in Rouses very often.

I'm guessing that's a type of mushroom?
