We’ll be in Chicago for 5 days and are looking for recommendations. We’ll have 2 kids with us so we aren’t looking for 5 star options. I’m looking for “you can’t go to Chicago without eating here” restaurants. Thanks

You should go to Kisama. If you can’t make it for dine in I would suggest ordering online. You can pick it up later

Kasama? Not really a place I'd recommend for kids... I guess maybe their daytime menu... but the dinner menu is a $235 per person tasting menu...

Portillo's for sure. Neat experience.
I can't recommend deep dish pizza.
Lots of good places around streererville.

Kids in tow?
Portillos
Pizza: You can do the deep dish to say you did it, but tavern is where it's at IMO. Pat's, John's, Jimmy's, Dante's, Bob's, Vito and Nicks. Roots pizza, not tavern, isnt the greatest of all time or anything(still very good compared to the best in most cities), but if you really want to occupy them they give them dough to play with(or at least used to) and can watch them toss and make pizza. Menus to color
Lula and Parachute are kid friendly with a bit more diverse food fare.
Au Cheval/Small Cheval or Kuma's Corner for burgers.
A lot of the Lettuce Entertain You restaurants will have kid friendly menus/atmospheres.

Italian beef sammich is a can’t miss for us. Should be able to get the kids hot dogs but maybe no ketchup depending on the place.

Au Cheval is great for burgers
Lou Malnati's was the best deep dish we had (didn't get to try Pequod's)

With kids, I'd absolutely recommend Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder after strolling through the zoo. They (and you) would love the Pizza Pot Pie. My wife and I try getting there once each month or so. Pretty unique, and tasty as hell. We always see plenty of families.
Otherwise, can't go wrong with Portillo's, Lou Malnati's, and Cheesie's (not a bad spot before a Cubs game with kids).
For dessert, Jeni's is always a good option for the kids. Otherwise, go for pie at Bang Bang Pie in Logan Square. It's about a 2-3 minute walk from my condo, but plenty of pies to choose from and gets very busy on the weekend. Usually an early AM line of people getting breakfast, but may as well indulge, too It's not open very late (6pm, I think?).
I'm not so much great with recommendations when people are traveling here with kids - I know you're looking for a certain atmosphere.

As someone said Portillo’s definitely
I liked Lou Malnatti’s too.
Both would be great with kids.

There’s a breakfast joint called Wildberry next to Millennium Park that the kids would enjoy.

For lunch one day go to Eataly. It's a massive, two-story italian pizzaria/geloto/sandwich/coffee/grocer/market. Really impressive. Kids can get pizza and gelato. Adults will enjoy it. Great spot.
I wouldn't call it a "must eat here", and it's not a dinner spot. But great during the day. Even if it's just 4pm ice cream/coffee/wine break.
