A handful have closed in Knoxville too.. it's not terribly surprising but also keep seeing more in the works.

The best ones have stayed afloat. So far.

I'm in my early 40s and I was all into the craft beer scene a few years ago. These days I couldn't even tell you the last time I had a craft beer. Just give me a Dos Equis and call it a day.

Same for older adults as well. We are becoming a more health concious society, it seems, at least in some parts of the country. Overall, beer has taken a backseat in the preferred alcoholic beverage.

I definitely agree with this. I used to be a big bourbon drinker, but Covid actually shifted me more to beer. I always tried different local brews from where I live and when I traveled. Lately I've been trying the different varieties of THC seltzers, but still love a good IPA. Good People here in town keeps making seasonal varieties, but still have the standard IPA always available.

Exactly. When the craft beer craze took off, I would try a ton of different ones. Now I just buy the ones I know I like.

Without even considering national trends - less drinking, everyone tired of IPAs, etc...

People who claim to be tired of IPA's likely never liked them to begin with and/or didn't drink very good to great IPA's including some hazy's. Next thing I will hear is IPAs cause gout...oh, wait, that might have substance. I'm more likely to go to a brewery that has multiple very good beers and tasty food than not. I paid $16.99 for a 4 pack of IPA this afternoon, I would rather them charge enough to make profits than go OOB.

Or, you know, they could just be tired of it. Either or.

Recently, tariffs on steel and aluminum have raised the cost of containers and brewing equipment, he said. This, coupled with statistics suggesting beer consumption is near an all-time low,

That’s nonsense answer. Tariffs have nothing to do with them closing, that’s a Democrat desperately trying to shift blame.
Personally, I’ve cut back on beer, when I have a few drinks now it’s liquor. Lots of people k know who were big beer drinkers have cut back.
Add on liability insurance, as you noted, it explains a lot.

More than a few have closing metro ATL and I can definitely see why. 5 years ago I was drinking 2-3 IPAs a day.

Now I haven’t had an IPA in a year and I just will drink a Miller Lite or a Modelo if I want a beer.

New breweries will either have to manufacture domestic or pay a tariff for chinese or import steel equipment. Aluminum could be subject to tariffs but i've read earlier that aluminum is exempt. Grain from the EU is subject to tariffs.
Since we are talking about closure of existing breweries, the steel and aluminum tariffs shouldn’t apply. Tariffs on imported grains may be a larger factor.

Charlotte has breweries closing as well. While it's a bummer, it's obvious a lot of these breweries are owned by people that have no idea how to run a business and were starting to lose their minds with the prices they were charging. You can shrink the glass or you can charge more, can't do both with meh beer and expect to survive.

My anecdotal perspective is that the breweries that have succeeded in recent times have become neighborhood watering holes that people congregate to for events, happy hour, etc. The sterile breweries that sell $10 IPAs and have no atmosphere have died off.
