I was given a week off for Mardi Gras, so this past Thursday (March 2) I set off on a culinary adventure. First stop: Marksville. Now, I’ve been to Marksville before on numerous occasions and haven’t really found anything there worth going out of my way for. However I had read (in past TD threads) about a little hidden hole-in-the-wall place called Harry’s that serves “pronto pups,” so I had to check it out. Pulled up to Harry’s around 2:30 on Thursday afternoon and my girlfriend asked him to describe exactly what a pronto pup is. He responded that it’s “a weiner with a very thin coating of batter, deep-fried.” I had also read that some people prefer them with mustard, while others prefer them with mayo. At just ninety cents apiece, I ordered two of each. My girlfriend ordered a crab burger, even though she was somewhat leery.

After a few minutes, the man called my name and handed me a bag containing my order. Now, at first glance, I wasn’t expecting much. But I gotta say, those pronto pups were pretty damn tasty. I preferred the mayo version. I took a bite of the crab burger and it was legit, too. I made a promise to myself that if I ever return to Marksville, I’ll pay Harry’s another visit.

After leaving Harry’s we headed to Paragon Casino Resort. I’m not a gambler, but my little son enjoys watching the alligators in the atrium and their indoor pool, so I booked us a night there. We spent the rest of the afternoon/early evening swimming, and then decided to check out the Marketplace Buffet for dinner, which sounded promising. BIG mistake. It was just plain terrible, probably the worst place I’ve been to in recent memory. I even told the manager we deserved a refund because it was nearly inedible (we literally ate about three bites of food apiece), but he refused to do so. Horrible customer service and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I ended up getting McDonalds for my son because he was still hungry when I left.

The next morning after checking out of the hotel we headed to Cottonport, home of my favorite boudin and hogshead cheese stop: T-Jim’s. I was bummed to find that they didn’t have any of the smoked variety, so I opted for a little of the regular and a little of the red (blood) boudin and a pound of hogshead cheese. It did not disappoint.

Next we headed down I-49 to Opelousas, to go to a restaurant I had been wanting to try for years – Soileau’s Dinner Club. I had attempted to go there two or three times in the past, only to find it closed for one reason or another. Luckily for me this time it was open. I ordered the Pecan Brochette – tender pieces of filet mignon tossed with fresh grilled pecans, served with a salad and choice of potato (I chose loaded baked). My girlfriend ordered the “Gourmet Special” which consisted of shrimp Creole, crabmeat casserole, crab fingers, stuffed bell pepper, fried shrimp, and seafood gumbo.

The gumbo arrived first and although I needed to spruce it up a little, it was pretty solid.

After a few minutes our entrees arrived. Mine was magnificent, and turned out to be my favorite meal of the entire trip. It included a cup of sautéed mushrooms and a perfect pistolette.

My girlfriend obviously couldn’t eat everything that came with hers, so I was more than happy to help her out. I really enjoyed everything.

Continued our trek down I-49 and checked in at the Holiday Inn on Evangeline Thruway. Very nice hotel. Spent the rest of the afternoon swimming in their beautiful indoor pool, then got ready for dinner.

So, we took the short ride to Hawk’s in Robert’s Cove, home of my favorite crawfish anywhere. It had been 6 or 7 years since I had been there, and I was eager to see if they were still as good as I remembered.

When we pulled up there was a chartered bus there, with a sign on the side that said “CRAWFISH CRUSADE 2017” – apparently a group of guys rented it out and were traveling all over Acadiana that day, sampling crawfish at different places before deciding on a winner. They were on their way out of Hawk’s, about to go to their next destination. I asked one of them what they thought of Hawk’s, and he said, “Phenomenal… incredible… best so far, by far.”

The reason I like Hawk’s so much is due to their thorough purging process, which results in a super-clean crawfish. I know a lot of people don’t like it, but they do sprinkle seasoning on the top before they serve them. I don’t mind it much, though. We only ordered five pounds to share because we were still pretty full from lunch. The crawfish were clean, sweet, and succulent. You can see in the photo below just how clean the fat is due to the purging.

Late the next morning we decided to take the 40-minute ride to the area between Kaplan and Cow Island to go to Suire’s Grocery. I had been there a few years ago, and really liked their turtle sauce piquant, which I had read a write-up about in the NY Times. So, I ordered it, and also picked up some of their homemade tarts (strawberry, fig, and blueberry) and cakes (fig, cream cheese, and heavenly hash). The sauce piquant was great (served w/ potato salad, a roll, a small piece of cake, and a nice piece of fried fish), but not my favorite (that distinction goes to Tee-Wayne’s in Gonzales). The tarts and cakes were just plain awesome. My gf had a grilled shrimp poboy that was pretty forgettable. My son ate every bite of his cheeseburger.

We drove back to the hotel where we all took a little nap. That evening, I had planned on going to both C’est Bon in Mermentau and D.I.’s in Basile, but I just wasn’t feeling up to going to both. So, we decided to go to D.I.’s so that my son could experience the live band, The Cajun Stompers.

My plan was to just eat crawfish, but when they arrived they were so gritty and dirty that I just couldn’t bring myself to eat them. You can see in the photo below how dirty they were compared to the ones I ate at Hawk’s . My girlfriend and son didn’t mind so they ate those, and I ordered a ribeye with a side of crawfish etouffee to put on top. The steak was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed it very much. I noticed a table next to us ordering desserts, one of which was blueberry bread pudding. I just couldn’t pass that up, so I ordered some to finish the meal. It was pretty basic, but had a pleasant Amaretto/almond flavor that I liked.

We stayed quite late because my son really liked the music, and they gave him some different instruments such as the triangle and spoons to practice playing. He really had a good time dancing and watching the band, and I’m glad he was able to experience it.

The original plan for Sunday morning was to go to Café des Amis in Breaux Bridge on the way back to Baton Rouge. However, I read a thread on TD where a guy was asking for advice as to where to stop in the Lafayette area for crawfish, and I saw that many people were saying Crawfish Town USA, so we decided to go there instead, since I had only been there one time, years ago and had been unimpressed.

We ordered 6 lbs. total and the first thing I noticed when they arrived were that they were barely warm – I assume they had been boiled earlier and had just been sitting around. The flavor was good, though.

On our way to Crawfish Town USA we had stopped at Crazy ‘Bout Crawfish and placed a to-go order to eat later. They weren’t quite done boiling yet, so we went and had our meal at Crawfish Town USA, then came back to pick up our order.

When we made it home to Baton Rouge I opened the bag and pulled one out. The first thing I noticed was how salty it was – then I noticed that they had apparently sprinkled a good amount of seasoning in the bag. My girlfriend liked them a lot, because she loves salty foods. I would have preferred to see how they tasted minus the added seasoning. I still wiped them out, though.

Overall, a fun and successful trip. My biggest regret is that we never made it to C’est Bon, which is one of the places I really wanted to go.

Nice job, enjoyed reading. Looks like the crawfish were hit and miss which is disappointing being in Cajun country.

My three favorite places for crawfish are Hawk's, Cajun Claws in Abbeville, and The Crab Trap in Frenier, mainly because they take the time to wash the crawfish really well. It really does make a huge difference, in my opinion.

Man, I'm still disappointed to here that DI's crawfish wasn't good.

Other thing I noticed, you went to Soileau’s and didn't order the fried shrimp.

I loved the story of the trip, but he has to fix this part for it to make sense.

Ahh...I'm an idiot. Missed that part.

Their fried shrimp are fantastic, IMO. Lots of people also rave about their tartar sauce, but I think all tartar sauces are nasty stuff.

I didn't try the tartar sauce, but their homemade salad dressings were very good.

Just melted some of the T-Jim's hogshead cheese into some grits and ate it with a link of the blood boudin. Was so good I had to go and get a second helping.

Looks awesome. Y'all must have some impressive digestive systems because I could never eat crawfish 3 nights in a row.

Fortunately I'm somehow able to eat as much as I want and stay relatively lean. Truth be told, I should weigh about 500.

Headed to South Beach in a month so I'm gonna go on a diet and shed some weight before then.
