This was a new one for me. Is this more common than I realize or did I stumble upon an oddity? Also, $24 for a 6-pack? I mean, I’ll pay that for myself, but that’s some discerning beer snobbery for people asking you to buy them a drink.

That seems like a pretty sheisty way for an owner to rob a charitable customer to be honest.

Plot twist:
The kitchen never sees or gets the beer.

Its just a money grab

Pretty common in certain dining scenes, but overpricing it is bullshite. Most place I’ve been it’s like $2 PBR.

Owner of Stinkys on 30A brought me into the kitchen and hand wrote his smoked tartar sauce recipe and gave me a jar. I bought the kitchen a round .

Only time I’ve done that but I do share wine we might bring with the server or owner/chef.

I've seen it at Odd Duck in Austin but it's only $1. I wouldn't even pay $24 for a 6 pack if it were for myself.

All the kitchen needs is 6 beers? Are they sharing? Open one beer...pass it around...everyone gets a sip.

A little more on the type of restaurants I’ve seen it in where I think it’s appropriate:

In restaurants with open kitchens where communicating and viewing the staff at work is part of the experience, buying the kitchen a beer seems appropriate. When I’ve seen it done right, the kitchen usually acknowledges the purchase. Just throwing it on the menu at random in a closed kitchen seems douchey at best and downright exploitative at worst.

I do a lot of free stuff for my cooks on my business card with my signature. If someone buys them a round I'll give them a card that they can use at their leisure

I would do it but leave no tip and a note about the beer being the tip.

might as well say give us some money and ill have rocco come punch you in the dick

buying the kitchen a round should be barely over what the owner pays for it

Yep. IIRC, it is like $9. I've done it before and actually saw the kitchen drink it.

So apparently it's a little more common than I realized. Funny because I was at City Pork last time I was in town and completely missed it on the menu.

I don't mind the concept, honestly, but $24 is just ridiculous. A 4-pack of Trillium is around $20, so basically they're asking me to buy the kitchen a round of DDH Congress Street.

You'll have a Bud Light and you'll like it.

I've seen it on a menu for like $1 but not for 24

That's shady
