I have a relative in BR who says he can't find Blantons on the shelf. So I see that supply and demand becomes a major factor in pricing. BTW my nephew is not shy about paying for what he wants.

No, your relative just needs to find an honest store owner. It's well known that the price of Bourbon isn't affected by supply and demand factors.

There is also a bit of false supply because most owners aren't putting it on the shelf. Not saying that the demand doesn't out pace the supply, but it also appears to be more rare than it is because it rarely is put on a shelf. I know one store owner that gets a case (6 bottles) every 1-2 weeks, and he isn't one of the big boys.

I might spend $140 if its the last letter I need to complete the set. Luckily, I have the complete set now sitting at the house!

I agree, but I'd rather that method than them putting it on the shelf for $140.
ETA: the backroom hold back of allocated bourbons is a symptom of distributors placing requirements on store owners to move certain products in order to get their hands on allocated whiskey. If they are being required to move certain products to get certain products, if they are "fair" they are going to reward the people who are spending money at their store.

I'd personally rather be able to purchase what I want, paying on the front end rather than the back end.
Of course the distributor issue is your government at work, affecting the market with antiquated laws.

This seems to be the case. But it also seems to be the case that the "market" through those avenues becomes skewed beyond what it would be if everyone was simply paying in accord with supply and demand for the product "on the front end rather than the back end."
Basically, under this current odd framework, NOBODY is actually paying (in money, at least) the true "market value" for this particular product.

Exactly. One of the points I've been trying to make when people have mentioned the "honest" storeowners who sell it for the "honest" price, but then give the caveat that "well, to get it at that price, you have to buy "x" other bottles, or you have to be a preferred customer".
OK, so in those instances, you're not really getting it for $50 then.

A gas station in Houma posted that they had the whole set of letters and was only selling as a complete set. Someone went in and offered them $1600 for the set and they obviously sold it.
Funny thing is the N was the same. They didn't have the one with the colon.

I'm a whiskey drinker, I'm going to buy whiskey regardless. I might as well buy it from someone who is going to appreciate my business. It's not a situation where I'm told, "you have to buy a case of fireball to get bottle X".
ETA: this is not in regards to Blanton's specifically, I believe I've only purchased 2 bottles of Blanton's in the past 5 years

If someone is willing to pay $139 a bottle, then that's what it's worth until no one pays that price.

You'd think a distributor would be at least a bit more generous which such things in the city in which it is based, versus elsewhere.
