Vittles" is an informal and humorous term for food and drink, often used to evoke the language of cowboys. It's pronounced "vittles" but spelled "victuals". The word comes from Latin words meaning "nourishment," "sustenance," and "livelihood"

Common Vittles Mentioned

Here are some notable examples of the vittles Granny cooked:

Fried Opossum: This was one of the most infamous dishes mentioned on the show, highlighting Granny's traditional Southern cooking style6.

Squirrel Stew: Another dish that showcased her resourcefulness and connection to rural life4.

Turnip Greens: A staple in Southern cuisine, frequently referenced in her meals4.

Hippopotamus: In a humorous twist, Granny once mistook a hippopotamus for a hog, showcasing her quirky character traits5.

It's pretty much side dishes. They serve vittles at this place in Pidgeon Forge called Huck Finn's. It's all sides.

I would truly love to know. It happens fairly often, and I can't figure out the grift.

I have it on my TV right now and the last episode had Granny finding a kangaroo in the back yard thinking it was a giant jackrabbit and Jed never seeing it and thinking Granny was hitting the jug too much that day.

There was one short scene where Sharon Tate played a bank employee that Jethro was sweet on and stole a few kisses from her before "Miss Jane" broke it up.

Tate sure was one hell of a looker.

Granny was the WYHI on that show. Irene Ryan was a legit smoke show in her youth and held her own as an older woman.

I always thought vittles was just another word for food/supper. I heard both of my Grandmothers use it when I was a kid, but it seems like it was always to come in for the day, because supper is ready.
