Cedar, by far, smells the best, though i wouldn't use it for meat, just fish.

For flavor, Hickory is my standard. I'll occasionally use some apple or pecan, but hickory is the bulk of the wood smoked for meats.

I'll cook a steak over mesquite because it doesn't take long but I would never smoke something with it. I usually use a mix of pecan and apple. And to answer the OP I say pecan

I was raised with the constant smell of red oak from our smokehouse. I'm gonna stay with it.

But, I accept all invitations to go and eat others smoked foods with whatever kind of smoke and love it, except for that 10th grader talkin' about pine.
I can think of a few things he could do with some wet pine needles.

Cottonwood. Natives smoke salmon at their fish camps with it...smells and taste heavenly
