I'm a raw oyster fanatic. I've only had them at acme and cooter browns in new Orleans. I will be going to new Orleans in a week and would like to know if there is a better place to get some. please advise.

It' hard to beat Cooter Brown's, I don't think I've gotten larger Oysters anywhere else.

Casamento's is closed for the season. Felix's is pretty good.

What define's "better" It's not like east coast where you get five different types of Oysters. The places here all seem to have similar oysters.

Oysters depend on the bed, wind, salinity, source, and freshness. It's a roll of the dice my friend.

Chesapeake oysters > GoM oysters

Gulf shrimp are the best in the world but the oysters are average at best

Peche has oysters from new england and the pacific northwest, so they are the best

CB oysters are low on the quality scale IMO. Unless things have changed with new ownership.

Bourbon House has really good oysters. They get selects from P&Js. PECHE is also really good along with Mr.Eds.

Does anyone remember the place on the highway to Venice? I think it was Tom's? Some huge meat fisted man that had the best gulf oysters I've ever had. All before the storm.

That's what they told me they where. I went for the first time in over ten years a few weeks back and have been back twice since. Very good, fresh, right amount of salt. Plump.

That's good to hear. With the previous ownership I'm pretty sure they were just buying the cheap oysters possible from restaurant depot.

Tom's Place in Empire. Best pit stop on the way to Venice. Katrina destroyed the place.

I had Cooter Brown's oysters the other night. They're not that great imo. A lot of them looked "milky" I guess would be the word to describe them. I'd say hit up Superior Seafood. Their oysters are pretty awesome.

All the natural oysters are going to be this way this time of year. They're spawning.

This would be an ideal time to try some triploid oysters. They don't spawn because the have 3 chromosomes instead of 2. They are grown on racks and mature in 2 years instead of 3. I don't know who sells them and they are a bit more expensive.

Compare Lapin often sources Murder Point oysters which are VERY good. Call them and research those beds, you're in for a treat if it works out.
