So I’m on a futile search it seems for a specific type of German beer. A couple of years ago while in Europe I had some very good beer. I noticed usually the beer in Germany was either White or Blonde. The White was usually a little cloudier and the blonde was basically translucent. While I liked both, I definitely preferred the white.

I met a German dude on the AT last summer and he said in Germany, White = unfiltered and blonde = filtered.

So I’ve been on a quest for a while to find unfiltered German beer that equals the beer I drank over there. I’ve been to a beer garden in Fredericksburg, TX and couldn’t really explain myself to the waitress.

Anyone know where I can get a good unfiltered German White?

For reference

Blonde

White yum

The bottom one looks like a Hefeweizen to me.

Go to local store, buy all German beers on the shelf, taste till you find it

Buy the German-style beers, not beers from actual Germany, which will not taste the same as OP experienced in Germany.

Most of the cloudy beers you had in Germany were probably some sort of wheat beer. There are a whole bunch of different flavor profiles in that genre. What sort of flavors did you enjoy in those beers?

There aren't too many non-wheat beers that are made in over there these days, but there are a few. Kellerbier is the first one that comes to mind.

It is. But I’ve had every Hefeweizen I could find at various places and nothing has replicated the look much less the taste.

Citrusy

It seems like someone mentioned something about orange peels in the fermentation barrels?

That sounds Belgian so I might be totally confused.

You won't find many German beers that have orange peels added. They fruit some beers with syrups, but most of that is when they serve it, not prior to packaging.

Hefe's have a clovey-banana profile. Some lean closer to clove and others closer to banana.

OK so you know the name, just not sure if it's available here or if there is something like it here. Sorry, just being a smart arse because you didn't mention the name but it's right there on the glass.

Eta
I'd just pound some Live Oak Hefe while wearing lederhosen if I were you.

weissbeir means the same thing as a hefeweizen. So its very likely you were drinking a hefe.

I would probably keep this stocked in my fridge pretty often if I had easy access to it

Even if you’re able to find it where you live, it probably won’t taste the same. Never going to be as good as when you get it from the source on draft.

Got that right. It was their own restaurant next to the big cathedral in Freiburg.

Live Oak Hefe is the GOAT. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier is also really good.
