Shrimp isn't normally what immediately comes to mind when people think of Indian, but the Shrimp Bagare is my favorite thing on their menu. I recommend that if you order from the menu.

Like others have said for your first time, a buffet style would be best so you can try a little of everything.

Never been to Bay Leaf, listen to those who have. One of my BFF's owns Nirvana in NOLA and I eat Indian food whenever I get a chance to visit, 2-3 time a year. This link will describe the various food options Indian Food 101

I usually eat food served from the buffet since they have a great variety. It’s all good as 2 of my favorites are saag paneer (spinach cheese dish) and Makhan murg (butter chicken)

ika Masala and Korma are gonna be your best intros into Indian Food.

I'd definitely agree with that

Or if you like eggplant get one of the eggplant dishes

An onion or veggie pakora would be a good starter to try. Who doesn't like fried onions?

I've been to Nirvana and thought it was just ok

I haven't been but Tiger Attorney says that Saffron Nola is really good and he is a big Indian food junkie based on what he has posted here over the years

I'm definitely trying that the next time I'm in town for a few days

The first few times I had Indian food I didn’t like it. All that slop tasted the same. Over time, I’ve developed a taste for it.

I did find out that the last time this company had their Christmas party at Bay Leaf, it was buffet style with mild to moderately spiced dishes. I'm all about some spicy rice and gravy, I'm excited to go try it out now.

Go elsewhere, had it this weekend and it was thoroughly unimpressive. Should have known when I walked in at 630 on a friday and there wasn't a single person there

I took my sons there for dinner a couple weeks ago for bonus points for their geography class. None of us had ever eaten Indian food & had no clue what to order. The waitress and the manager (maybe owner?) were very helpful with what to order. Everything we had was amazing. Will definitely go again. Sorry I can’t recommend specific dishes as I forgot the names of what we ordered.
