Since COVID I have noticed that many Mexican restaurants are serving their salsa in disposable cups. Well, those have lids. I’ve often been at the end of my meal and have a good bit left over and I ask for the lid for the salsa. I also ask for a small bag of chips to go. Depending on the server I get a look. I don’t want to take advantage but is it wrong to ask for some chips to go? Leftover Mexican is much better with the chips and dip.

I wouldn't do it. Better to ask for more chips halfway through the meal and then ask for a togo box and put them in there along with the leftover salsa.

You better be dropping good tips on those servers. Otherwise it’s kind of a dick move.

I am tipping higher than usual. I just don’t want to put them in a bad position. I won’t do it anymore. I’ll just ask for an order of chips and salsa to go and pay. I was just curious what the etiquette was.

If you're already taking home leftovers, I can't imagine anyone is giving you a weird look for saying "Mind if I get some more chips to take home with this?".

If you're not taking anything home and still trying to take chips (that aren't yet on the table) and salsa, I understand the look a little more.

This is the smart move. They won't charge you 9/10 times when you do this because (a) you dined in and (b) you're showing awareness that you're asking for something meant for at-table dining.

I don't see a problem with it so long as you're polite

I always get chips and salsa to go

It’s cheaper and fresher then going to a grocery store and buying chips and salsa

Would you ask your Olive Garden server for a bag of bread sticks and marinara to go because they were offered free with your meal?

There is a Mexican Restaurant in Meridian I still dream about, 4 years after leaving town - it was that good. Many times, when we enjoyed a meal there, I would tell them to bring me a "big nag" of chips and a "big cup" of salsa as a take out, when we were ready to leave.

It was an off-menu item they sold, and so much better than any chips and salsa available at Piggly Wiggly or Winn Dixie.

I also would drop by on a Saturday afternoon and stand at the register to wait for the same two items as a to-go purchase. It never bothered them at all, especially when I never expected them to give either item to me and was willing to pay them for the service they were providing.

By the way, a "Big bag" of chips, was indeed a big bag, and a "Big cup" was more than enough to scarf down with my bag of chips.

Chips and salsa are free while you are there. Asking for chips and salsa to go is the same as going to an all you can eat buffet and expecting the restaurant to let you go fill up a to go box to take with you after you've eaten. Cheap arse move.

MD, where might this dreamy Mexican Restaurant be in said Meridian Town?

As a return favor and should you ever find yourself back in Meridian, try Mimmo's for a downtown lunch. Started in Quitman (yes, that Quitman), I think it was after you moved that they expanded to MEI. Damn good food.
