My back patio doesn’t have a lot of room for grilling, outdoor seating, and other decorative outdoor things. I’m mainly wanting to add more tools in the grill/smoke/bbq arsenal, but I just don’t have the space.

But about 20 yards from my back door is a big flat open area that would be great for it.

Just wondering if anyone else has an outdoor cooking space away from the door. My mind is wavering between it sounding like no big deal to walk back and forth and also sounding like a total pain in the arse.

It's not a pain in the arse unless it's raining sideways. In fact, I like it more than having it right outside the back door. Keeps the heat, smoke, spills aways from the house. Cleanup is easy and can just hose everything down. Wife is happy because there is no clutter outside the back door.

Same, moved mine to a a side yard over Quarantine. Nothing in the way, all the crap can be stored in some outdoor storage units, and I can even glance at the temperature gauge from inside the house.

I have a detached garage, and my grilling stuff stays in the garage. I roll out the kettle when I grill. It is also about 20 yards from the kitchen door. I like it. No smoke gets into the house. It is close to the garage, so if its raining, I have shelter (a big screen tv and beer fridge in my garage helps when waiting out a storm).

Have an outdoor kitchen cabana on the other side of my pool. I have most of the stuff I need out there, just load up a sheet pan with everything else when I go out to cook

That’s what I’m picturing.

Of course it’s going to be a shitty day the day I go to bring the cooked food to the house and trip on my way back.

I have a separate area to the side of our pool where my two charcoal, pellet and gasser are located. Over covid, I moved my behemoth Primo XL, by myself, around and through the house to avoid trying to lift it up the stairs onto my deck. Had it on the deck until a week ago. I always thought I wanted the added convenience of the grill right out the back door, but when grilling burgers and chicken, the smoke tended to waft towards the patio. I always had to pull it out for cooking, then store it back so as not to have it obstruction our view of the yard. I prefer having it back in its more permanent place, and plan on constructing a roof over the area where my pits are located. Currently, they are under and around a pergola. So to answer your question, It is better for me to have it separate from the house, in "MY" area!

Haven’t had that happen yet! I tend to drink quite a bit and have a couple of steps to mind on the way back in as well.

Yes. We refer to it as "The Park" ....about 60 yards or so behind the house....a cleaned up fence line....plenty big oak trees etc. for shade. I have a rectangular fire pit lined with bricks. 1/4in steel plate in the bottom. Various length hooks to hang pots on. An adjustable swing grill. Steaks cooked over oak and hickory coals are...there are no words. An 18in Weber....used very little...a propane 'fish cooker'.....I also built an 8ft long picnic table out of treated 2x6's preserved periodically with Wolman's F&P....after 21 years it looks better than new. It's a spring and fall venue. Just to darn hot middle of the summer. Have cooked just about anything you can think of over the years. Foods cooked out doors over wood coals can't be beat!!

LINK

The one burner stove.....The living room twice.....the 8ft table.....The fire pit..lined with brick..steel plate in bottom..hooks for various pots..stainless steel rotisserie

Apologies for crappy picture posting. Wish me luck for next attempt.

If you buy standard commercial half or full sheet pans, you can buy covers that snap on. Like this: LINK
Even if you trip, everything will be fine if you’ve got the pan covered with a lid.

My FIL has his probably about that far away from the kitchen door. I've cooked there hundreds of times and never thought it was a pain. He's got a pergola with a gas grill, sink, smoker, and beer fridge plus a fireplace a table and chairs and 2 sides of bar seating. It's super nice.

Heck, mine used to be down a flight of stairs out in the yard. A 20 yard walk would seem great if it is all just flat land. We're having a new deck built right now, and we did leave about a 5 foot wide by 8 foot long landing at the top of the stairs for the grill. It will be outside the screened in area, but easily accessible to the kitchen. Also going to build a patio out of some old stone pavers we have, and it will be fairly large, so I'll probably get a dedicated smoker to keep out there. I will be able to roll it under the deck when not in use to keep it out of the elements.

As soon as I can get my old brain taught to post pictures. I would be happy to.

Porterhouse steaks...over wood coals...on the adjustable swing grill. Meat cooked over wood coals is far superior to meat cooked by BTU's, Watt burners, or charcoal.

LSU Tiger Bob's set up...

I had never really thought of doing a set up like that. I think it would be awesome.

That is a hell of a setup; I am sure its googleable but can you give some guidance on where you got all the pieces to that puzzle? Specifically the bars, rods, clamps, etc...

Sure. The idea for the set up came from watching a TV show (RFD?) Johnny Nix. (Camp Fire Cafe(?) There's not much left to see on google, but enough to see the set up. At one time, if I remember correctly, the set up could be bought from him for $$$. I decided to build my own version. The up right pieces are 3/4" rolled steel, the hooks were made from 1/2' pieces. Bought from a place that sold that kind of stuff to the public Bought in 20' lengths that they cut to 10' lengths so as to haul in my truck at no additional cost. Next it's gets complicated...can't remember how I ran across the guy, but he built/repaired leaf springs mainly for 18 wheeler vehicles. I'm still amazed at the machines/equipment he had in his shop. Not the least of which was two gas fired forges, and some type of 'press' that would cut the steel rods to length like a hot knife through butter. Different lengths went into the forge, and into another machine that created the loops and ends to hang pots on. He worked for maybe an hour...cost $20. I was very lucky to find this guy that had the equuipment to create the pieces.... Bought two horse shoes...a friend welded them to the up right pieces. Bought a piece of 1/4" steel plate to go in the bottom. Main reason? If the ground is wet your fire has to evaporate all of the moisture in the ground before good coals can be produced. With the plate,..ground moisture is not a factor. Also the steel plate gets very hot producing a radiant heat which helps. ~~~~~ Will be glad to provide additional information if requested.

ETA. The Stainless Steel Rotisserie I bought either from Johnny Nix or someone he recommended...I Can't remember... Cost? $100 ...I think. This was many years ago. The swing grill came from Bass Pro. You will need a longer post to mount it on. The one that come with it is too short for my needs. To cook steaks etc. I slide it down very close to the coals to sear....up 18" to 24" to finish. Doneness it determined by Thermapen.

ETA. The cross piece that goes between/through the horse shoes is 3/4" also.
