400-450 a pound. We have a family of 5. Went through a quarter in 3 months. Moved up to 1/2 and that seems to be our sweet spot order every 6 months.

Recommend that you ask for the heart, sweet breads ,Flank, skirt, ribs (cut how you like), brisket as they will grind it if you don’t ask. Let them know if you want roasts cut a certain way. Need to tell them how thick you want the steaks too.

I'd go whole pig or split one

Whole cow is just too much

If a few posters went in on a cow, I'd be very interested in that.

I don't need a half or even a quarter of a cow. More like an eighth

I thought Hungryone’s post was well thought out and informative.

I think most of hungryones post are pretty good, but I've noticed that they have a serial downvoter, no matter what they post.

My dad has cattle and I still don’t do it. Too many cuts we don’t use and I’m not a planner. If I decide to cook something, I buy it on the way home from work.

Same here. But I do plan our meals and keep beef in the freezer. I would rather just buy the cuts I want from Costco. Although my brother just had one slaughtered and he gave me the heart and liver which Costco tends not to have.

I like getting the oxtails, shanks, etc. Those aren’t the easiest thing to find at a moments notice, and both are excellent in beef veg soup.

I think 1/4 is about $9lbs, a 1/2 is around $8lbs. another thing to make sure you ask is if their cows are grain or grass fed, taste will be different. I prefer grain fed, grass fed is a little to lean for me, you might prefer that though.

In college I had an uncle who had a chicken/cattle farm. Every once in a while he'd have a cow that just needed to die. He'd get it processed and offer it up to family.

Needless to say, if you're not used to it, a straight off the farm steak is an entirely different taste. So different that some people absolutely will not like eating it.

I bought 1/2 a cow back in September. 260 lbs for $940.81. $3.62/lb. It took 4 months to get, so I paid a little bit every month instead of having to pay the lump sum all at once. Definitely worth it.

That’s another reason I don’t buy it. I just don’t like it.

I think I found the problem. Did he corn these old sick cows out for a couple months or were they too close to death?

I buy a full steer every year through the FFA. Kids show the animals then they are auctioned off or are sold as a "barn sale". Barn sale is the way to go - about $1600 for the steer, about 1,000 for the processing. I get to tell the butcher how I want it cut, thickness of steaks, roasts or ground, ribs size - everything. This year was a 1300 on the hoof, about 950 processed. completely filled my 26 c ft freezer.

Look into your local FFA at your school. Talk to the ag teacher if you have it. they can guide you.

It benefits kids and you will not get better meat anywhere.

About to buy a few steers. They are going about a dollar a pound. I will buy a couple 260# and let them flatten up on grass in my pasture then hit them with corn at the end of the summer then get them processed.
