Is the wifi really worth the extra $60? I'm ready to jump into the sous vide game, but I am not sure the full benefits, if any, of the wifi feature. Those with experience using this, what are your thoughts?

I have one that's bluetooth, and truthfully I've never even used the bluetooth feature, let alone found the need for the wifi remote connection.

Yeah I am having a difficult time thinking the wifi is necessary. For a set and forget item (correct me if I am wrong with that understanding) I don't see the need to control it while at work. I figure if it reaches desired temp then waiting until I get home won't overcook this. Is this accurate?

It won't overcook, but some things will have their texture deteriorate if left too long.

Still... what are you going to do, turn it off from work and let it sit in the water bath until you get home? The temperature won't drop too fast.

I guess if you were doing something big and really wanted a 4-5 hour sous vide cook, you could set it up with an ice bath in the morning to keep the meat close to fridge temps and turn it on a little after lunch from work.

I've just never needed that function.

I haven't looked at the numbers in a while, but there may be a wattage difference between the two. Speeding up the time to get to temp (either initially or getting back to temp after dropping cold or even frozen stuff) is worth a price difference for some. For me? I'd pocket the money and spend it on stuff to cook. But, do consider that the difference may be more than just wifi.

I use the Wifi on my Joule all the time.

I normally set it up at lunch or in the morning, so when I leave work, I can turn Joule on and by the time I get home, the water is heated and ready for me to drop the meat in.

It's pretty convenient.

What temp does your water heater get it to already?

I actually have to add ice to the tap water to do a steak medium rare, no need to heat the water ahead of time.

I've never once used the bluetooth feature on mine. Don't think I'd ever use the wifi either if I was given the option.

110ish

So if I were doing steaks I wouldn't need to wait too long, but doing thighs or something like that, it just saves an extra 5 minutes or so

It's probably not worth an extra $60 for most people.

Yeah, mine comes out around 140ish.

I could see using the wifi if I had something that I wanted to cook for 5-6 hours on a weekday. That's about it though.

I got the wifi for the extra power. Bought it on that mother's day sale.

I've got wifi and use it. I can have a beer out back or play with the kids in the front without worrying. Certainly not vital but it is a nice luxury and I'd miss it after using it

It's a luxury, if it comes down to the $60 being the difference in not getting it, save the $60 and get it.

I use it occasionally, it's not something I would have to have if I rebought, but it's handy.

I don't have one but I have a bluetooth thermometer for my grill that I love. Reason being is to be able to monitor without having to hover over the grill.

I would always buy smart device or not.

I don't really see it as important as a grill thermometer. It's more like being able to preheat your oven and know when it is heated to that temp. You don't really have to babysit it like a grill.

Overcooking is not an issue unless you let it go for a while longer.

Agreed.

I have a remote thermometer for the smoker that's great, but that temp can fluctuate plus I can monitor smoker temp and internal meat temp.

Don't need to do any of that with a sous vide.
