Another restaurant bilking customers out of money via ‘taxes’

Abel Browns, Augusta, GA
Tax on meal was 13.7%, which is beyond what is mandated by state and local law. When asked, the bartender said ‘We just add in the credit card fee into the taxes line’.
No mention anywhere on signs or menu that there was even a credit card fee, and I bet had I paid with cash they still would have hidden a ‘fee’ in the taxes.
Pay attention to your checks

If what you said is true, that is against the law and I have no problem reporting these places to the relevant agencies

Is it legal to just add whatever fees you want and disguise them as taxes?

I don’t think so, but who is going to enforce it? Local governments don’t want to disturb the hospitality industry.

So the credit card fee is over 6%?

A little less, tax rate on meals is 8.5 to 9% in Augusta

State DOR or consumer protection, and they do it all the time

The Georgia AG says that's a no-no....might ask them

And you'd expect something to be done in a timely manner? GeorgiaPacking sued the state for violating their own shall issue laws for what seems like a decade to get results (Dekalb county, Sheila, last name redacted, for me.)

Thank Dodd-Frank.
Average transaction fees for credit is 3.5%, which makes it pretty close to GA state tax plus transaction fees. Those points aren't free, genius.
Yes, because your 22 year old servers would have encountered two people paying with cash in their entire tenure with whatever shithole (including near fine dining) you were eating at. It's not a conspiracy, they just don't know what the frick they are doing.
