As much as I love Bourbon, it has lost a bit of its luster to me

Don't get me wrong, my bar is still stocked with expensive "rare" bourbon. But I want to drink that all the time, not just for special occasions.

I can drink Foursquare every night and not bat an eye at the cost.

That Jamaican funk comes from the addition of dunder from the last batch. Personally, a Jamaican rum that is mostly pot still and a little column still is my favorite. It's just got that funky island taste.

One of my absolute favorite simple everyday cocktails is:

Big ice cube
Juice of a quarter lime
4 dashes Angostura bitters
Lemon peel
Sprig of mint
Appleton signature blend
Canada dry sugar free ginger ale

Holy shite. A man of taste. I really neglected to mention Worthy Park as one of the great Jamaican rums. It is exceptional. Great work. I bet your wife is hot and your kids are smart.

Eta: I also see that Highland Park 13 in the background. Can't believe they discontinued it. Finished my last bottle a couple of years ago. Incredible scotch.

I started posting in the WB/ Scothc thread last week, I intentionally did not post any rums, but since you let the cat out the bag….. I have more but this was what I could grab without hitting the liquor bunker. Worthy Park is my fav, Hampden is the Ardbeg of Rum, first time I tried it I would have sworn it was peated scotch.

add sugar and coloring to their spirits.

I’ve heard this complaint from rum snobs (I’m not calling you one, just saying I’ve heard this from them several times). Complain about adding sugar and how the rum is not pure only to turn around and mix it with bitters, coke, fruit juice, etc…. I say if it tastes good to you, drink it. There is nothing wrong with zaya or bumbu (even though both are too sweet for my tastes), especially if you are just starting to explore rum. Once you are into it then explore more and learn about it. The difference between rum, ron, rhum. The solera method (another target for rum snobs), how rum from different places taste (that Jamaican funk). There are a ton of great tasting rums out there. Try as many as you can afford and enjoy!

I like Bumbu XO (Black bottle), not as sweet as regular Bumbu..$40 ish

Diplomatico (green bottle) is very good as well...$38ish i think

Bayou Rum Mardi Gras Edition, $72ish, but very good. Tastes like bread pudding

Next time you are in town, grab this from Acquistipace. It brings the funk!, and it's very good. I'm just starting to dip my toes into the rum game (Toof!), so I don't have much to compare it to. Knowing that you like the Campbeltown funk I think you will like this.

Same thing with whisky snobs, especially scotch. Some won't touch any with caramel coloring. Personally I am on the fence with it. Do I agree and wish these distillers would show more integrity and bottle without chill filtration and added coloring? Absolutely. I also will stop what I am doing the moment I see an Oban 18 and drop down a few pours. While it's not an integrity bottling, it's still fantastic.

This is the main rum component in my scratch Mai Tais. I grow my own key limes for juice. Excellent rum.

100%. Some Tiki drinks will even call for a spiced rum. I like sweet rum, but these days I search for rums that taste sweet because of excellent distillate instead of added sugar. Pure rum will have zero sugar in it. Amazing how such a liquid can taste so sweet without sugar.

I’ve taken a few steps into the rum world without walking away from bourbon.

My initial sampling of rums priced around $30 led me to land on Kaniche XO. This quickly became my favorite sipping rum (neat or on the rocks). It tasted like what I expect rum to taste like.

I then decided to double the price and see where it led me. There were a lot of positive reviews that led me to Diplomatico.

I know it should have appealed to me. But it didn’t. They were 2 very different rums. If I were blindfolded and sampled each without being told both were rums, I would lean heavily on Kaniche.

With bourbons, I get it. I find myself loving the bourbons the industry loves, so I’m surprised I have not yet had the same experience with rums. Maybe some of you experts can help steer me along a better path.

If Kaniche XO is my gateway rum, where might I venture next to elevate my palate if I am not drawn to Diplomatica?

I believe kaniche is a total wine brand. Bottled by maison ferrand, which bottles plantation. So basically it is a total wine store brand plantation rum. If you like that, you’ll probably like plantation 20th anniversary (which may be what’s in the bottle you have.)

I think you would like something along the lines of papas Pilar ($50ish or Ron Centenario 25 ($80ish) if that kaniche is what I think it is.
