Go to a reputable local liquor store (Martin's, Acquistipace, etc.... NOT TOTAL WINE) and ask them what are some quality Jamaican rums. I got the Smith and Cross at Acquistipace, and it is excellent. I haven't seen it elsewhere, but I'm sure there are other good ones out there to find.

I have all the rum and bourbon I can use….

It’s the cognac that I don’t have.

Edit: don’t have Jamaican rum…. Guess I need some of that too

Jamaican rum is absolutely NOT necessary. Use what you think tastes good.

i'll try it this year. don't know much about rum as i don't particularly enjoy it. i always bought myers just to get a dark jamaican rum.

The Jamaican rums tendy to be a little “funky” . Try a Barbadan (The Real McCoy, Doorleys, Mt Gay) or even a Nicaraguan (Flo de Cana). You will be pleased.

which is why it works in this recipe and that AB calls for it. Sure you can use a different rum, which I have, but I found that funk is what made this egg nog stand out so much.

How much will I get with 1 batch?

Is it worth making a double?

Thoughts of storing it in a vacuum seal bag?

I don’t typically like bourbon. What’s a good one to use that will compliment the flavors nicely and won’t be overpowering?

i have used Jack Daniels Honey in place of the bourbon in this recipe with good results.

Just made a double batch (was a easier since the dairy is more available in quart size)

Some in mason jars. One in a soup to go container. Vacuum sealed the rest. That one is going to be the long term

I want to try it. Every year I think I’ll do it but the raw egg yolk gets me. Convince me to make some tomorrow.

Best nog ever. So different from store bought! I would make it soon and it’ll be really good for Christmas. Make some more during the holidays and store until next year. Profit.

The recipe calls for a pound of sugar, and you’re worried about raw egg yolks.

That's awesome and I will definitely try this. Must be very boozy to keep all that dairy from spoiling. What is the longest you've let this sit before drinking? No need for refrigeration and just store in a cool dark place? Cheers

I would refrigerate this, though with all that liquor maybe it would be ok on the shelf. I’m not sure about that one. The alcohol does keep bacteria from populating, so could probably sit indefinitely.
