There was no way we were getting to all of them, so we tried as many as we could.

I am going to conduct it over an entire weekend, so the issue of being too full won't be a problem. It's also going to be a blind taste test -- I am going to label them as I buy, but when I eat them I won't know whose is whose, until my wife tells me which one I chose as the best. I will get all of the ones that you fellow posters recommended. No videos, but I will post pics.

Don't waste your time by going to any places in BR.

Drive to Covington and get 2 dozen hot glaze from Butter Krisp. There isn't another donut on this planet that can hold a candle to a butter krisp.

You can trust me, I live up to my name. My friends and I did this several years ago, the great baton rouge breakfast showdown of 2009. We tested just plain glazed and several meat kolaces.

I will say this, we spread it out over the course of a week, took notes each morning, and getting fresh donuts does make a big difference. Make sure you have coffee and water, sometimes the flavor of the glazes can linger.

The winner glazed donut was from Thee Heavenly Donut on Coursey (which beat out the one on Highland, along with several other shops). To be fair, Tiger Donuts was not around at the time, and I had never been to Southern Maid in Dutchtown. SM is probably my current favorite, just cause the owner/operator Ken excels at customer service. But, with both of those (SM and THD), freshness is key. They are both good donuts even a few hours later, but piping hot, fresh out of the glazer, either of these two would be hard to beat.

The best Kolaces that I could find at the time ended up being from Wholly Donuts on Jefferson near highland. But, these days, Southern Maid's Kolaces are hands down a current favorite. They can get a little pricey if you're feeding several people, but definitely a crowd pleaser.

That's a bold statement, friend-o.

What kind of donuts? Are they big and fluffy (a la Thee Heavenly Donut, or Shipley's) or are they the more compact dense ones (like Southern Maid or Krispy Kreme)?

Typically the bottom is stuck to the box and they tear when pulling one out they are so hot and drenched in glaze. I promise you need to try one if you have not.

Aren't good. If they tell you they're right out the fryer hot, that means expect a cold donut.

Mikey's in New Roads is legit but that may be too far for your challenge. I think they are related to the one on Airline (between Greenwell Springs and Prescott).

Because I'm a gluttonous fatbody who thoroughly enjoys ingesting these deep-fried sugar-coated artery-cloggers, that's why.

I'll let you know where Mr. Jay from Jay's used to live, and you can stop by to see if he wants to get the equipment out of storage and compete for the title.

I'll nominate Prince Donuts on Brightside. Their croissant donuts are good.
