There was a blurb in Business Report a few months ago that said a specialty grocery based in California was in talks to go in that location. That sounds like Trader Joe's.

What's so great about Traitor Joe's?

Example. They find one thing that people like that may be offered in 5 flavors. They pick the 1 or 2 best flavors, make an exclusive agreement with that company, buy the whole lot for a discounted price, and sell that product at a price much lower than the competition.

Interesting, that doesn't really jive with... IMHO.

How is the beer selection? And do they have a good bakery? I like fancy bread.

It's a difficult store to describe unless you've actually been in one. I'm a nerd when it comes to grocery stores, so I tend to stop in whenever I'm in a city that has one.

They usually have small beer selection, but it tends to be brands and styles I've not seen elsewhere. They usually have a decent wine selection and lots of selection at very low prices (Two Buck chuck for instance)

I've also bought a nice selection of affordable coffees that are under their own label. I think I spent $8 a lb for peaberry coffee

They have a good selection of dried fruits and snacks. My wife and I munched on candied hibiscus flowers while driving around Nevada. I've also scored 1 lb bags of almond meal for $4. (great for making fillings for sticky buns and almond filled king cakes)

It's not the type of place you do all your shopping. The stores are probably the footprint of a walgreens.

I do wonder if it would mean different beers becoming available here. They seem to be pretty vertically integrated in distribution. I think 100% of their products are brought in from their own distribution. They aren't getting serviced by the chip guy or the beer guy. They must buy in bulk and stock their DCs.

Could this bypass some of the silly beer distribution limitations in this state?

I doubt it.

It's not a huge selection but usually an interesting selection. Then again I find most beer selections outside of the state interesting. They also do crazy stuff like this...

The ones that I have been in have been about that size. They are far from a large store. They carry a lot of similar items as Whole Foods, but with less selection and much better pricing. It is not a place to buy all your groceries, but instead a place to supplement...

That would fit the bill. !5,000 sq. feet is not a large grocery.

No, but they have their own brands of beer, so I'm sure we would get those through normal distribution means.

No, they're generally much smaller.

I've been to probably a dozen of them. They do have decent produce but it's usually a pretty small store. They do have good prices on a lot of their house brand stuff and they typically have good prices on wine.

No. Most of the problems are the distributors, not the stores. Smaller craft breweries have to make an agreement with a distibutor which costs them money. So the brewer just stays, where its cheaper to get out there beer. Also, as in the case of dogfish head, they don't expand their distributive area do to satisfying demand with existing markets first. They just can't make enough beer to expand to louisiana. They have trouble filling orders in their preexisting markets due to demand.

They sell drinkable bottles of red wine for $2. They have a lot of specialty items and an excellent selection of pre-prepared meals/sides that are generally inexpensive.

For example, I used to buy packages of brown rice that just needed to microwave and pouches of Indian curries and sauces when I lived in DC. It was perfect for people who like to eat well/diverse things, don't have time to cook, and not spend a lot of money.
