The ones in San Francisco or New York.

New Orleans has had good/very good Chinese restaurants for many years. I'm not current with the food in New Orleans. But, for many years, I tried different restaurants in New Orleans on a nightly basis. I tried a majority of the restaurants mentioned in the "Underground Gourmet", by Richard Collins. It was my "bible".

This was my thought as well.

As far as Chinese...I have only found 4 good places...

Trey Yuen (very good crawfish dishes), Five Happiness (very good soups and hunan beef), Cafe East (great lunch deals and a dressed up menu that goes beyond the normal Chinese items), and Royal China (I only go here for dim sum).

As Clooney said, NYC places are on another level...but these are all good choices.

I find myself eating Vietnamese more often because NOLA has excellent Vietnamese options.

Great list. Excellent, iconic, and just "native enough" to satisfy all needs. I will have to add afternoon into evening on the front porch of The Columns as well. Truly a wonderful, unique time.

Indeed...Commander's 25 cent matrini lunch plus Columns for drinks is money.

Could count a Pascal's Manale lunch as well in that one.

Please reconsider about Pascal - the staff is a bit cocky, the bbq shrimp is extremely overrated and overpriced...and when I walked to my car, I heard gunfire just a little bit too close by!

NOT HAVING A BBQ SHRIMP POBOY FROM PASCAL MANALE makes this list incomplete.

That sandwich is not overrated........in fact, it's a slap in the face to the orginal makers of the bbq shrimp.........almost every famous person in the US has had this experience and signed a got damn picture proclaiming it's perfection.......

I took some friends the other day eat lunch and it was 13 bucks for a 8 inch poboy on fresh italian bread and a soup or salad........that is not expensive!

Great list, you can argue with every item, but that's not the point. One something I really agree with:

...but one thing that really stands out is the abundance of great neighborhood places that seem suspended in time

Very few cities have this great asset, it is the one thing I miss most living in BR, we have a few, but not a lot.

I would have had a formal dinner at Antoine's on the list. We dress in black tie and have a walk back in history. Is it the greatest food in the city? No, but it is almost unchanged in 100 years.

It's my second favorite poboy in the city...sure, an argument could be made for it on this list, but I could only pick 10...if I win the lottery and can sit my arse at home, I will be more than happy to crank out a list of 100.
