Let your senses envelope you Paws. Give in to all that is New Orleans.

Good list TA. In today's times, it's almost a crime you can get a plate of hot beignets and a cup of coffee for under $5. Considering that's how much a small cup from Starbucks cost.
On Mid City (I am biased b/c I live in the little nook right by Delgado that isn't quite Mid City and isn't quite Lakeview)- it's the best neighborhood in New Orleans. Downtown gets all the tourists, and Uptown is where everyone wants to be seen, but Mid City is the heart and soul of the city. Great architecture, City Park, Bayou St. John, cemetaries, and some real classics that you've named.

Practically grew up in my Grandmother's house on N. Hennessey, just off Dumaine. Spent many days as a kid playing pinball at "the casino" in CP or going to Bud's Broiler by the track on CP Ave. To this day, I still try to make it to either Beachcorner or Venezia's when I get into town.
This is one hell of a list, TA. I've done about half of it, though I have to admit that I never did Galatoie's on a Friday afternoon. That's one of those things that I kept saying that I'd eventually get around to but never did.
One of my favorite experiences was when they'd have the caroling in Jackson Square. I'm not much for the caroling stuff but friends and I would go over to the Chart House, have some food and drinks most of the day, then go on the balcony that night and overlook everything from there.
It still bums me out to this day that they closed the Commander's Palace that they used to have here. It was always fun taking friends to 25 cent martini lunches then turning them loose on the Strip.

Commander's Palace = overrated
Certainly not true unless someone has claimed it was the best restaurant in the world. I bet this same person thinks Sammy's or Chimes is the best restaurant in BR too.

If I had the capital, I would love to buy it, renovate it, and open it back up. It's been sitting since Katrina. It wasn't a real gem before then either, but the burgers were still great.
The last time I was in there before Katrina, the lady was smoking a Marlboro Red while making my burger. I didn't know what to do really, so I just laughed. Burger was still awesome.
Only in New Orleans.

Central grocery muff and a barq's is my last meal on death row special.

1.) Central Grocery/Cafedu Monde- Central Grocery's muffaletta (which I happened to have for dinner tonight) is the signature sandwich of NOLA (even more so than poboys IMO)...and the smell inside Central Grocery is one of the greatest aromas I have ever inhaled.

You would be hard pressed to find me disagreeing with any of those choices. Its not just the food, its the quintessential New Orleans dining experience mentioned by TA that takes place at these iconic locations. However, its hard to describe in words....u just gotta go see for yourself.
However, I would have to find a spot on there for the Camellia Grill, sitting at the counter on those little stools, an having Marvin wait on you...Potato an onion omelet, cheeseburger/fries, and a chocolate cherry freeze...my death row meal.

The idiocy on this board regarding Commander's and Galatoire's is insanity. You must not have a waiter or personal charge account at either establishment. It is like Rao's in NYC, you are in or you are not in. Enjoy eating at Outback.
Being someone who is "in", I agree that the Commander's bashing is ludicrous. That is a really great restaurant and I can't think of anything else like it in the country.
I feel slightly differently about Galatoire's. IMO, unlike Commander's, the food at Galatoire's is mediocre (for its price point). HOWEVER, like Commander's, Galatoire's is about much more than its food, and the atmosphere alone (especially Friday downstairs at lunch), is worth every penny.
ETA: Fantastic list TA (then again, I knew your taste was excellent)! Making me want to plan a trip to NOLA ASAP!

I agree...I hated leaving off the Grill...it was the last one before the cut...I figured almost eveyrone has done it before so Lola got the nod.

Solid list. Pre-Katrina, I would have lobbied for Ruth's Chris on Broad Street after Saints games.
Posted on 2/18/09 at 1:21 pm to clooneyisgod
Crescent City Steakhouse was also considered for their Farewell to meat on Fat Tuesday.
Posted on 2/18/09 at 1:24 pm to Tiger Attorney
Another one like the Chris'/Saints scenario would be Bruning's/lakefront before it was wiped out.

I don't even like talking about West End...it just gets me said...that part of NOLA culture looks to be gone forever.
