the maps were showing that the water would reach i-10 in 24 hours. its been well over 24 hours now and it doesnt even seem like the water has reached 190.

Only one bay has been open. There a lot of low areas that have had to fill up.

There were three fully open and one partially open when I went over it three hours ago.

The water will divert around a bayou that runs through the middle of the basin. I think there is also an elevation change with a pipeline that runs through the middle of it. Also, it will probably favor the east side over the west.

I drove over the Four Mile about two hours ago and could see an effect. Not much, but there was some water there that had not been there before.

There are now 4 bays open.

One of those, the southernmost one, is only partially open.

the orcs taps out at 620,000 cfs so they will not be able to keep the 30% down the atchafalaya river

Right. Once the flow from Natchez hits 2.06 million (I think), the percentage of water going down the Atchafalaya will be capped. None of the Morganza water goes down the Atchaflaya until way south.

There is a map showing in 30 hours the water would have gone all the way pass the end of the levees and turned north and backed up all the way to Melvile. What is that over 60 miles? In 24 hours it hasnt gone 4 miles

I think the inundation map must have assumed a hard opening at 50%. Regardless, the Corps may have been using it to get people the hell out of the way.

News reports of water rising around krotz springs are nonsense.

That is laughable coverage. I saw a news crew filming water over at Three Mile Lake, which is separated by two levees and a river from the immediate effects of the water coming from Morganza.

anyone know a spot where I can go sit on the levee, drink beer, and watch the tidal wave?

They are hard to find. State Police are chasing people off the levee in the best spots. Roads are closed to others.

Backwater will not be noticable in Butte La Rose for another couple of days.

If anyone is looking to joy ride. FORGET IT. National Guard and sheriff's office are posted at all up ramps and the pontoon bridge.

This is true the water is rising but not from the opening of the spillway(yet). I grew up there and I have never seen the water this high.

There was a color-coded inundation map published several days ago by USACE.

That was based on 50% of the gates opening at Morganza.

Col. Fleming spoke at a town meeting in Morgan City on 14 May. He explained the number of gates open will depend on the Mississippi river flow. The Mississippi is not expected to crest until 24 May and should remain at that level for about ten days. So Morganza Spillway should be open for a few weeks at the minimum.

In 1973 the water in the Atchafalaya was so high you could stand on the levee at Krotz Springs and rinse off your shoes in the river. The seepage was so bad they had to hire farmers to run tractors 24 hours a day using re-lift pumps to pump water out of the ring levee and back into the river.

With 9 gates open now, the flow rate is unreal. Surfs up big time compared to just 4 gates open. In a half hour, the water came up 2' at the base of the HmyLa1 road levee.

Yep that will increase it for sure. Just got off the phone with a guy that lives north of Krotz Springs. He says the river is just now approaching the levee and the Corps says it will crest somewhere at Melville and Krotz Springs 4 feet below the level in 1973.

All the crops are drinking up the river water fast so its not spreading as fast as thought.
